They never are but they are one of the few book to film adaptations I can actually sit through because they don't completely destroy the book.

I am a bit disappointed it won't be released in 3D and IMAX now. My local cinema just got an IMAX screen and this was going to be the first film I saw in IMAX.

Nope it wouldn't be ready in time and they didn't want to delay it. Part 2 is supposed to still be in 3D though.
