Documentary where parents 'spy' on teenagers.. -
January 7th 2011, 09:54 PM
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00x9cjq
Not sure if the link will work if you're outside the UK, but basically its a new series where teenagers on their first holiday with friends are filmed and followed around/spied on by their parents, who then appear at the end and tell them about it. I have a good relationship with my parents but if they spied on me for a week then that might well change! I just find the idea very weird. Obviously the teenagers must know they're being filmed (and presumably that their parents *might* watch the footage) but it still reeks of an invasion of privacy. Opinions? Would you be annoyed if your parents did this to you? |

The video doesn't work outside the UK, yeah.
But wait, is that... what the... SERIOUSLY!? I stopped keeping browser history because my parents would go and check up on what I've been doing. I also get really, really annoyed because they read my mail, etc. etc. But that takes obsessive parenting to a new level. Honestly. "Want to know a secret?
You are beautiful. Black, white, gay, straight, bisexual. Whether you are smart or quiet or impossibly in love with your best friend, someone out there cherishes your smile and gets butterflies when you walk into a room. Someone out there can't stop thinking about you. You Are Beautiful. Don't ever believe differently." If you ever want someone to talk to, about absolutely anything, feel free to inbox me! ![]() |

Well I enjoyed the show. Had a good discussion about it with a friend too, though probably not relevant to what you're asking, so anyway...
I wouldn't be annoyed if my parents did it since I don't have anything to hide. I think I'd end up boring them more than anything. |

I haven't watched the video but I think it sounds like a good show. If I went on it, I'm welling to bet my parents would be surprised but I wouldn't do nothing they didn't know about already as I have a pretty open, good relationship with my parents.
To be fair though, if you're going on the show you must realise you're being filmed and it'll being on TV so there is always a chance your parents will see it regardless of whether or not they're spying on you during it. |

I wouldn't be okay with this at all. Privacy is a really big issue to me, even with my parents. My business is my business--and that should apply to everyone, regardless of age. Just because you're a teenager doesn't mean your every f*cking move is up for debate. God, I hate that.
"Once a little boy sent me a charming card with a little drawing on it. I loved it. I sent him a card and I drew a picture of a Wild Thing on it. I wrote, “Dear Jim: I loved your card.” Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said, “Jim loved your card so much he ate it.” That to me was one of the highest compliments I’ve ever received. He didn’t care that it was an original Maurice Sendak drawing or anything. He saw it, he loved it, he ate it." |

Hmm
If your getting a free trip someplace your bound to ask whats the catch, and if you have nothing to hide then fair enough on the other hand, I still think I'd be pissed if my rents didn't think they could trust me on a holiday without them. |

I think it's ridiculous. "Oh you have a right to privacy but only when you're no longer a teenager". I mean I wouldn't care as I wouldn't do anything stupid/illegal, I just hate the concepts of parents being able to complete intrude like that because they say it's alright.

I can choose which it shall be. Yesterday is dead, tomorrow hasn't arrived yet. I have just one day, today, and I'm going to be happy in it." -Groucho Marx "Don't be afraid your life will end; be afraid that it will never begin." -Grace Hansen |

i'm glad my parents would never do something like that. it would be so embarrassing when they turned up! haha. but yeah, they knew they were being filmed so i don't have much sympathy. they probs just liked the idea of being on telly and didn't think about their parents spying on them. none of them did anything shocking though.. they both seemed pretty sensible, especially the girl. maybe some others won't be later in the series.

Personally, I don't really like the idea of the show. I take things like privacy very seriously. I'm glad my parents wouldn't do something like spy on me or do anything else to inavde my privacy...I made it clear to them that I would appriciate it if they respected my privacy since I've always respected their's-and they haven't looked through my stuff ever since. However, these teens would have to know they're being filmed, so I don't really feel that sorry for them.
Anyway, I don't think it's right for parents to completely invade their teen's privacy. To me, it's a matter of respect-if you respect the privacy of your parents then they should show repect to you by doing the same. Anyway, I think I've pretty much said everything I've wanted to say here. |

I've always seen my privacy as a very big deal, so I would be pretty pissed if my parents stalked me like that.
![]() It's not that I do anything bad that they would be able to see from taping me, but it would still be insulting because that is a COMPLETE invasion of privacy. I don't understand the concept of that show. Do the parents not realize that their sons/daughters probably won't be able to trust them ever again? Or at least for a long time? |

LOL my parents would find it boring as sin
I don't do anything they don't know about anymore If they spied on me when I was 15 however they probably would be shocked a little.

Sounds like an excellent way to make teenagers not want to talk to their parents for a long, long time.

I saw this and it just angered me more and more as it went on. From my eyes its extremely unhealthy. Everybody has things their parents should not know about, and this is not just teenagers. Everybody. I also think if you don't trust your children to go a week without you, then you raised them wrong. End of.
Also, the lady in the episode I watched kept going on about how her daughter doesn't like her because she's always babying her and disrespecting her privacy, and how she's sad its affected her relationship with her daughter. Now, if this is the case, do you really think spying on her for a week is going to help!? The woman even seemed shocked when someone suggested her daughter may be angry, saying she hadn't though of it that way. I think its wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong. It is horribly wrong for a parent to spy on their kids.
I remember when me and my sister caught my mom going through my sister's text messages on her phone. Me and my sister both got pretty angry with my mother. Spying on children will only cause them to have a bad relationship with their parents. |

I've seen this! I frickin love it!
Personally thinking about it now I'd be really annoyed if mine did this but I don't know, all of the teens on it seem more glad to see their parents at the end of the holiday. So I'm not sure how I'd be in the actual situation. ![]() Three little birds sat on my window, and they told me I don't need to worry.
