I think this movie is released next week, UK-wide. Does anyone have any opinions on it? I'm discussing the subject with my friend at the moment and we seem to agree that it just doesn't feel like something a movie should be made about. I know it's pretty much the Scottish equivalent to Green Street or whatever, but maybe because this one hits home a bit more, it might be a bit tough to watch. I'm not sure... |

I'm really interested in watching it. It doesn't seem any more violent than Trainspotting was in my opinion.
I understand where you are coming from. I think the fact it's about teenagers rather than adults, like in Trainspotting, makes it seem rather wrong, as you don't think teenagers would act like that. Sad thing is I've seen most of the trailer in my home town. "Life is pain, anybody that says different is selling something" ~ Fezzik's Mother, The Princess Bride. ♥ "To die, would be an awfully big adventure."~ Peter Pan "Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumoured by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it." ~ The Buddha 14-04-2010. I hate to bump my own thread, but I finally got around to checking out this movie.
It's powerful, powerful stuff. I left the cinema upset, speechless and depressed. It's heavy going from the start, with a few well-timed comic lines. At 2 hours, it's a lot to handle, but the package is worth it. I think this is an important movie, especially for Scottish people. I would like to think it'll raise awareness of why people get into the ned lifestyle, but there is the fear that people will miss the point and just find the hooliganism in the film funny, as some did in the cinema tonight. Funny? I found it more scary than funny. The problem with raising awareness of motives in the movie is that no solutions are offered, nothing to fix the problem, merely suggest that these factors are why it happens. For people who have witnessed, been involved with, been a victim of ned activity, this film will leave the same impression on you as it did me. I can't speak for those foreign to neds, but I think you will find it fascinating that people really do live this way. Not once did I think the movie was dramatised. I believed every word, and if I was told it was factual, I would not be surprised. And that, my friends, is scary. |
