Televised Award Shows - March 1st 2011, 09:51 PM

I'm interesting in hearing what some people have to say about these on several levels and I'll first give my views on these levels.

To start, I'm not a fan of watching these televised awards. I find them often pretty boring and often the individuals handing out a certain award use corny cheesy puns that are meant to be funny. I also don't like them because the only purposes I see in them are a) great way for actors/musicians to get public notice without needing to spend a lot on advertising and b) they're a fashion show.

For the first one, if you are a fan of someone, what is the point of watching a show where they may or may not get an award, or even be in the nominees? You don't learn anything great and if you only have interest in a few actors or musicians, then all the others become boring. For the second one, I say it's a fashion show because if even you don't win a single award or aren't in any of the nominations, you can still win. By that I mean newspapers will highlight the clothing you're wearing and portray it as though it's better than most of the others, so it's indirectly and unofficially winning. For this, it's rather useless because there is no point in the actor/musician getting recognition for the clothing unless they made it. The people who should get recognition are the designers, not have an actor/musician say something like "yeahhh, I loved this show and look at this dress, I wanted a blue dress and I got this amazing dress, yeah!!". Even if you're a fan of the actor/musician, you learn nothing of them and your focus is on their skills not on their clothing, so you have no interest in how fancy their clothing is.

I bring up this mention of clothing because today in the newspaper, that's what was in it. Of course it showed some of the awards and such but there were pages of what certain people wore. I think to myself, "who gives a flying fuck what they say they'll wear and what they wear?". To me it shows they have deep pockets to spend a lot and the designer of the clothing is ignored.

I could rant on other movies or shows but I won't do that in this thread.

The question is: Do you like award shows? If so, which ones and why? If not, which ones and why?

I can rip you off, and steal all your cash, suckerpunch you in the face, stand back and laugh. Leave you stranded as fast as a heart-attack.
