Disney Movie? - March 12th 2011, 10:21 PM

Okay, as I am watching Snow White, me and my mom were discussing how the majority of the Disney Movies have one parent or none. For example, Cinderella, Snow White, Peter Pan, Beauty and The Beast, Pocahontas, Little Mermaid, Mulan, Bambi, etc.

Why is that?
Did anyone else notice this?

Doesn't Mulan have 2?

The Dad and then at the beginning the Mum and the Grandma are there when she's getting her face made up

But yes, I get what you mean and in most of them the parents die like in Bambi and Finding Nemo

Hmmm, that's a fair point, I never actually thought of it.

It creates drama and gives the characters sympathy.

Yeah, now that you've mentioned it that is true. Wonder what the reason behind that is.

I've never really noticed this until you pointed it out but I guess as the majority of the characters you have mentioned we're suppose to feel sorry for, it may add to the effect and create sympathy? I'm not too sure, good spot though!

Re: Disney Movie? - March 13th 2011, 12:53 PM

I've actually noticed that, and always found it weird. Other than movies like the lion king and stuff, most of them do seem to either have stepmom's or a single parent. It's weird. I don't know what they're trying to portray in that aspect really. In the beginning I thought, you know, they were trying to say that people lose people that they love and they're stuck in the worst scenario possible, but, you can get out of that and you're dreams come true? Idk.
Lol. Yeah, Laura, I think they hate parents' too!

And she flies to a place where she's loved.

I've never noticed that!
It probably is because they start out with basically nothing and than make a name for themselves and find ways to succeed by the end.

It could be something along the lines of 'Hey! This stuff sells well, let's do it again!'
That and it helps build up a sad story for the person so you feel even better when something good happens...

The animal instinct, the wanton man
She fed him with a hunger, an appetite
And fillin' with emotion he took a bite'

Re: Disney Movie? - March 16th 2011, 12:26 AM

I'd never thought of that.
But Mulan did have two.
*tries to think of more*
Um, Hercules? (I guess he had four parents though. )
Anywho.
I think maybe because quite a few Disney movies are based on fairytales or other previous works of fiction, and by having one or both parent/s gone, they're sticking to the original storyline.
Or maybe it's just kind of to empower kids, since if they're missing a parent or two, they can be more independent.
Then again, it could just be because it's useful to the plot.

It's harsh, and cruel.

But that's why there's us - champions.
Doesn't matter where we come from,
what we've done or suffered,
or even if we make a difference.

We live as though the
world is as it should be,
to show it what it can be.

Re: Disney Movie? - March 18th 2011, 07:03 AM

I think it has to do with the theme and concept of the movie.
I mean, you're theme is going to be much broader when you have faults within the movie.
Also, it could be so that people see that not all fairy tales are perfect. Plus, it'd be really boring if every movie had the perfect family, yeah? Disney needs to get more creative..

But all the choirs in my head say, no oh oh
