Anime Discussion Thread

I figured I'd start a thread, seeing as there isn't one.

This is a general thread for anime discussion.
If you're not familiar with anime, one of the most mainstream examples is Naruto.

Recommendations, opinions etc.

Oh and please don't post any spoilers!

Guess I'll start the thread off:

Has anyone watched Durarara? What do you think about it?

I can't say I'm a fan of anime.
I did, however attempt to read guitar basket.
That counts right? But then I got lost with the whole right to left deal.
I wouldn't mind trying again though

I'm of the opinion that if you don't like anime, you've not been watching the right stuff.

Watch the first two episodes of Baccano, the first two of Durarara and a few of Naruto. Try http://animefreak.tv/ . If you really don't like any of them... there's no hope for you! Haha!

Yeah, I'm 18 episodes (I think?) into Durarara at the moment. Took me a while to get into it. They really seem to take a drip drip approach to the story, so for the first half of the series I didn't really care about most of the characters. Getting more into it as the story unfolds, though.

Really? There's 25 total, so you've taken a while. I don't particularly like Mikado, but his friend, Izaya and Shizuo are really memorable. It's still definitely my favorite anime. The ending is actually really satisfying actually. It could end there and be totally satisfying and self-sustaining, or have a second season that doesn't feel forced; and most animes trip up on that.

Wouldn't Pokemon or Yu-Gi-Oh be a more mainstream example than Naruto?

I haven't seen a lot of anime but I love Tenchi Muyo and Cardcaptor Sakura

Anime movies count too, right? I've seen quite a few of them like Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Metropolis, Kiki's Delivery Service

They count too! If you haven't, watch Summer Wars! It's amazing! Full length anime movie, really good.

Yeah, it took me different lengths of time to like different characters. Shizuo and Izaya I liked early on, but I still don't particularly care about Mikado even after the revelation re: Dollars. His friend just annoys me, and I don't care at all about the people in the van, whatever their names are. I think part of the problem is that I have trouble remembering Japanese names. With such a large cast, I lose track of people.

I didn't particularly like Mikado. He's a pacifist, isn't particularly funny, no more of a 'nice guy' than his friend, doesn't really do all that much.
His friend (still can't remember the name) is awesome. When you get to the end of the series, you really start to like him, although I liked him from early on.
The people in the van are cool, and they make a pretty big impact on the storyline too!

And actually I have the same problem with names. I'm starting to get better though.

I prefer Princess Mononoke over Spirited Away so so much. Spirited Away was hyped too much for me I guess, but I still really enjoyed it. Mononoke is pretty flawless to me, it's one of my favourite movies.

Also, if anyone has seen Tales From Earthsea, could you please explain the ending. With appropriate spoiler warnings, of course.

I watched Tales From Earthsea ages ago, when I was 11 or something, sorry I can't remember anything.

I actually prefer Spirited Away. The animation on Princess Mononoke is rather dated, the voice acting.. it's okay. The storyline is great and everything, but Spirited Away was so awesome at everything... yeah

Also, I would personally recommend Deadman Wonderland. It's incredibly gory and contains some really mature content (not sex or anything like that, just aimed at adults) but it's very, very good. I think they've already finished the manga, but the first episode of the anime was aired like a week ago.

Nah, 4Chan's favourite anime is Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. For which I can't entirely blame them.

I'm a huge anime fan. I'm actually attending an anime convention on Friday! I'd say my favorites are Higurashi no naku koro ni (triggering on many levels) and Fairy Tail. ^^

My second favorite anime next to Durarara. Durarara wins because I hated the ending of Death Note

I read the manga. I thought it was pretty good, thought it could be really wordy at times. I'd get annoyed when Light was like "I'll do this, but if L suspects that, I should do this, but he'll know I suspected him, so I'll do this instead"...etc, for the next 6 pages. >_>

I've heard a lot about Fruits Basket (I'm picky too ), what makes it good?

The series tells the story of Tohru Honda, an orphan girl who, after meeting Yuki, Kyo, and Shigure Sohma, learns that thirteen members of the Sohma family are possessed by the animals of the Chinese zodiac (十二支 Jūnishi?) and are cursed to turn into their animal forms when they are weak or when they are embraced by anyone of the opposite sex that is not possessed by a zodiacal spirit. (Though at least by the anime it's more of just torso to torso touch that activates it.).

I'm really picky when it comes to watching a new anime or reading one I'll literally go on different anime sites just to find an anime that I'll actually watch it'd be impossible for me to list them all.

I like to watch Animated TV shows and movies.Tangled is my favorite animated movie and Pokemon is my all time favorite Tv show.So I just watch Pokemon Episodes online.It is a too good story.

If anyone's looking for a more gory/mature anime, Deadman Wonderland (They do simulcasts on Crunchyroll) looks to be one of the best anime of all time. It's definitely 18+ though

I've never really been into anime although I have watched some. I liked Trigun and Wolf's Rain was quite good.

I watched a bit of Bleach as well and that started well but MY GOD it drags when they start shoving filler episodes in. I just couldn't be arsed with it after a while so I stopped. Also, they just recycle the same plot over and over really. I don't get why it's so popular amongst anime fans.
