May 12th 2011, 01:31 PM
Are there such a thing as "The Perfect Album"?
If so what is that perfect album you? And what makes them the perfect album? Is there such a thing as Perfection in music? Honestly I really cant answer what the perfect album is to me, But I do fully think there is that perfect album. It's just a matter of finding it. ![]() Your waiting for the perfect moment. I don't believe in "perfect" as much as I do "flawless." There are some albums that I think are complete works of art, or are examples of greatness within a genre, or are innovative, unique, or just downright special. It can be anything from undeniable talent to a special connection you have with the album and artist, so I doubt you're ever going to find a unanimous "perfect" album. Hell, for me, an album can be better or worse than usual depending on the mood I'm in.
For example, sitting at 1am in the dark, the perfect albums become Kid A by Radiohead and ( ) by Sigur Rós. You will get lost within their landscapes. The former will terrify you, and the latter will do whatever you let it do to you. The fact that these albums make you feel is what makes them flawless to me. You go through an experience listening to them, and you come out the other end feeling like it was time very well spent. Rain Dogs by Tom Waits is another flawless album, but not in the same vain. It's a kooky, eccentic, unique work influenced by just about every genre there is, but the easiest way to define it is simply "experimental." Now, anyone can mess around with different instruments, but no one can command the world of sound like Waits does. He has a pretty flawless collection of work in general, but Rain Dogs makes for a very accessible yet crazily talented album. Just as flawless as Kid A and ( ), just in a different way. |

Well you could argue any "Greatest Hits" album could be considered great, but then it would be to easy to say that they made it over time rather than a single album that may take a few months. I would say that a good album to me is a story, song by song which all pertains to the album theme and has rythmn and good overall sound.
I like Rise Against's Endgame, Metallica's self-entitled album, 3 Doors Down's Away From The Sun...... just to name a few. "Gravitation is not responsible for people falling in love" - Albert Einstein

If I had to choose an album to be described as 'perfect', I'd probably pick Consolers of the Lonely by the Raconteurs. From beginning to end, it tells you different stories and makes you feel as if you're there with the characters--whether it be Billy in Carolina Drama or the rider in The Switch and the Spur. All the melodies are full-bodied and build to a soaring crescendo but somehow manage to stay unique and interesting with each song. It's a triumph and if I had to define a perfect album, that would be it.
"Once a little boy sent me a charming card with a little drawing on it. I loved it. I sent him a card and I drew a picture of a Wild Thing on it. I wrote, “Dear Jim: I loved your card.” Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said, “Jim loved your card so much he ate it.” That to me was one of the highest compliments I’ve ever received. He didn’t care that it was an original Maurice Sendak drawing or anything. He saw it, he loved it, he ate it." |
