Smile Folk Music? - June 30th 2011, 10:04 PM

So I used to not like a lot of music, I stuck to what I wanted to listen to and rarely branched out. What I listened to was always different but I recently became so obsessed with folk music..not like slow "der der der I have a banjo" music where everyone is missing teeth.

Like, I went to see a band last night called The Mighty Sequoyah, the lead singer is my bestfriends older brother and I've been listening to their CD nonstop for the past week so I was really excited to see them live and it was great.

Other bands that are kind of like that would be Delta Spirit, the singer Sayde Price, Dr. Dog.. Um, yeah those are a few (: just wondering if anyone else likes this type of music? I like a lot of other stuff too, a lot of other genres haha.

Here's the link to The Mighty Sequoyah website/CD (which you can listen to) so that you kind of know what I'm talking about, I like their song Lighthouse best and it's their most popular but I love Dreamcatcher too.

Anyways, I'm just kind of bored, and curious!

When I hear about folk music I think about stuff like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4I4P_...eature=related and this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-x9K...eature=related which really is quite different from what you seem to listen to, but I must prefer this stuff, I find the bands like the ones you posted to be a bit boring =/

Have you tried Noah and the Whale?

The animal instinct, the wanton man
She fed him with a hunger, an appetite
And fillin' with emotion he took a bite'

I love Noah and the Whale too actually haha (:

Delta Spirit has a song called Bushwick Blues that's really good!

The ones you posted are more...Irishy.. I guess hahaha (: I guess you could call what I listen to modern folk but it's definitely folk.

Folk is typically unique to each country, because it comes from their routes. From England, I love Laura Marling. From Scotland, Roddy Woomble, LAU, Treacherous Orchestra, Box Club, John McCusker, Kris Drever...

I absolutely love Laura Marling and Johnny Flynn.

To love. To be loved. To never forget your own insignificance. To never get used to the unspeakable violence and the vulgar disparity of life around you. To seek joy in the saddest places. To pursue beauty to its lair. To never simplify what is complicated or complicate what is simple. To respect strength, never power. Above all, to watch. To try and understand. To never look away. And never, never, to forget
