METAL!! \m/(!!_!!)\m/ - July 4th 2011, 02:40 AM

what are your favorite metal bands?

OTHER THAN popular mainstream "screamo" such as black veil brides, bring me the horizon, asking alexandria, etc....

here are some fine examples

The Black Dahlia Murder- melodic death metal
Pig Destroyer- grindcore
Nile- death metal
Slayer- thrash metal

I'm gonna try be sensible.

Metallica were my first love and therefore need to be mentioned. Machine Head will probably be their successors to the kings of metal if they can follow up The Blackening with another good album. I think Iron Maiden are my favourite metal band now though. I also really like Trivium.

I'm not going into subgenres. I might tomorrow, but not after the screamo thread.

Oh, let's see what list I can come up with:
Mastodon, Nightwish, Lamb of God, 2cents, Nine Inch Nails, Korn, Marilyn Manson, Opeth, Killswitch Engage, Machine Head, Apocalyptica, Metallica, Mushroomhead, Mudvayne, Pantera, System of a Down, (old) Slipknot, Dethklok, All That Remains, Dream Theater, Rob Zombie, Within Temptation.

Oh, and Scott, you should listen to their new single "The Locust". If the rest of the album lives up to that, it'll be amazing.

I was a fan of metal in my younger years, But in the past couple years I've grown away from the metal scene, I still do listen to some good metal acts, but its just like a couple of bands mainly Blind Guardian and Kamelot. So I'm kind of a metal fan but not to much anymore.

What is it with this forum and misusing the the genre 'screamo'?

Edited by: Sapphire_Wings: triggering

Also seeing how everyone is using the word screamo for anything that has screaming vocals on it I'm going to my favorite 'screamo metal' is currently Cynic.

Cuz dey liEk HaVe ScrEAMin in Der MuZicKz

Are you shocked though? In my opinion I think around 10% of people do know the difference between screamo bands and band that metalcore/death metal bands that have screaming in there vocals.

I don't really pay attention to genres and I'm not going to claim that I know them a great deal...right now I'm going off what bands my itunes has labelled as metal...

Metal bands that I listen to quite often are
-Highlord
-Nocturnal Rites
-Secret Sphere
-Rob Zombie
-Nightwish
-Avantasia
-Bloodbound
-For My Pain
-Celesty
-Dream Theater
-Cain's Offering
-Gamma Ray
-Labyrinth
-Sirenia
-Within Temptation
-At Vance

So sorry if any of the above bands aren't actually classed as metal...

I think symphonic metal is a safe enough genre to post about in here without getting killed...

Yeah, Nightwish are my favourite band, hence the avatar and signature. I've loved them since around 2004 and they still hold a special place in my heart. I think they're simply perfect.

I love For My Pain too, who Cara mentioned...since they have Tuomas in the band

Within Temptation are also fantastic, along with the likes of Sirenia and Tristania. I remember hearing Celesty a while ago and enjoying them, don't know enough about them to say I'm a big fan though.

On the more power metal side of things, Kiuas and Sonata Arctica are grand. Also partial to some Alestorm.

"Shocked?" somewhat.
I thought I only experienced this kind of stupidity in real life.
There is so many tools online that can show the difference Screamo and post-hardcore, metalcore, ect.
The top two google links can show the difference.

Hell the musicians don't even know what the genre means either and they're tainting their stupidity to the fans.
I know if I was a fan of a crappy scene band I would listen to my 'idol' rather than some random guy online (implying I'll never be smart enough to google 'screamo;
The former drummer of VersaEmerge said when he first started the band it was a screamo band when it was actually a post-hardcore band. Also they barely screamed in the band.

Also here is a section of the screamo article on wikipedia.
Quote:
Derek Miller, guitarist for the post-hardcore band Poison the Well, claimed that the term screamo "describes a thousand different genres."
Quote:
According to Jeff Mitchell of Iowa State Daily, "there is no set definition of what screamo sounds like but screaming over once deafeningly loud rocking noise and suddenly quiet, melodic guitar lines is a theme commonly affiliated with the genre."
Quote:
Bert McCracken, lead singer of The Used, stated that "screamo" is merely a term "for record companies to sell records and for record stores to categorize them
These guys are pulling these from their asses.
Screamo is a sub-genre of Emotive Hardcore and it defines only one genre of music so that means people know what screamo sounds like.

Also what the hell, Screamo was not coined by the record company to sell music. Screamo bands do not play for money, it was never a mainstream/ hugely successful genre, it's always been underground.

Also the wikipedia is a huge mistake.
Quote:
Some bands fuse electronic music with elements they borrow from screamo. Crunkcore combines screamo with crunk hip hop and various electronic elements.
Screamo will never have anything to do with crunkcore.
You can even tell by the name crunkcore, it has more in common with post-hardcore than screamo.

Alas! I am not alone. <3 I recently saw Amon Amarth. Great band.

In This Moment
Killswitch Engage
Otep
Electric Wizard
Slayer
Walls of Jericho (but they could be hardcore in their early days?)
Abandon All Ships
Chthonic
Arch Enemy

Lol, pirates, vikings, and female screamers always wins my heart over.

I don't mind you finding pirate and viking metal to be laughable, but don't mock symphonic

Pirate metal: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzQkMzqivMY
Symphonic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XkDJ0ZBWsGI

If nothing else, listen to the second link, it's one of the most amazing displays of vocal talent I've ever heard.

Ensiferum (folk/viking metal, listen to token of time)
The black dahlia murder
Dissection (Black metal; Storm of the light's bane and The Somberlain Are amazing albums)
Agalloch (doom/black metal; check out ashes against the grain and The mantle albums)
Death (one of the most important death metal bands of all time)
Amon Amarth (Melodic death/considered viking metal)
Kalmah (melodic death; personally a huge fan of swamplord and swampsong albums; listen to heroes to us, it's the song that got me into them)

Just a few bands I personally enjoy. PM me if you like anything and would want me to suggest more.

My problem with Ensiferum is that I like 2 songs off of each album and then don't really listen to the rest. I haven't heard their latest release yet though which I'm told I'd like.

Yeah, I was like that with them at first, but they grew on me, and now I listen to their discography start to finish and don't get bored But I can definitely understand what you mean
