Linkin Park -
July 6th 2011, 01:53 AM
(I will have no debates going on in this thread what genre Linkin Park are)
Who's a fan of Linkin Park? What'd you think of their evolution from their first two albums to the more recent Minutes to Midnight and A Thousand Suns which are a deperature from their early sound? An improvement or should they stick to their angst-ridden anthems? |

The only song I like of theirs is What I've Done. The rest of it I can't stand.
(And I like how you're now terrified of anything to do with genres.)
"Once a little boy sent me a charming card with a little drawing on it. I loved it. I sent him a card and I drew a picture of a Wild Thing on it. I wrote, “Dear Jim: I loved your card.” Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said, “Jim loved your card so much he ate it.” That to me was one of the highest compliments I’ve ever received. He didn’t care that it was an original Maurice Sendak drawing or anything. He saw it, he loved it, he ate it." |

"Life isn't about how popular you are... What girl or boy you are dating or who you know. Life is about always being true to who you are or what you believe in. Never let anyone convince you that their way is better than your way. In the end all we have is our hearts... and our minds. I prefer their older works as they are more coherent and less confusing sound-wise, although A Thousand Suns has more thoughtful lyrics and the singers compliment each other. I do find Minutes to Midnight to be the worst of all their albums and I'd go as far as saying it was a complete fail as I'll explain below.
For some songs on Minutes to Midnight, such as Bleed It Out, I thought my ears would start to bleed because they're trying to experiment while maintaining some of their traditional roots but it ends up as a chaotic mess. Unfortunately, it's not just this one song on the album, I feel their entire album is a mess because they're trying to make a new identity but it seems as though they tossed everything it failed in one ugly heap. Nothing was complimenting anything else, such as the lyrics weren't complimenting the songs, the vocals weren't complimenting the music and so forth. For A Thousand Suns, the music is a bit more coherent and it also allows Chester to showcase his singing skills as being quite diverse and he has a good voice. It also showcases Mike's voice without him rapping as he's singing more and his voice compliments Chester's voice. Even in some of their older works, I sometimes found Mike's rapping fragmented the song and Chester's scream parts didn't fit with the rapping at all. I do like the newer albums lyric-wise, especially A Thousand Suns because the songs are more meaningful and aren't randomly strung along, they all fit with the same general theme. Some songs were a lot more dramatic than others so they stood out as a melodramatic sore but overall, the album was much better than Minutes to Midnight and compared to their earlier works, it has more thoughtfulness put into the lyrical meanings. I can rip you off, and steal all your cash, suckerpunch you in the face, stand back and laugh. Leave you stranded as fast as a heart-attack.

Meteora is definitely my favorite album by Linkin Park. I also like some songs off of both Hybrid Theory and Minutes to Midnight. I do prefer their older music, but I understand that artists need to change up their sound every once in a while.
I will say that at first I found a lot of the songs on Minutes to Midnight to be kind of boring, but a few of the songs have grown on me. I haven't listened to their newest album yet. I'm still undecided on whether or not I like the new direction of sound they're going for.
Don't just exist...LIVE. |

I'm quite a big Linkin Park fan. My favourite of the albums is Hybrid Theory, play me any song from there and i'll be happy. When Minutes to Midnight came out, I wasn't too thrilled with it, they could have done better, but I tried to understand them in my own way.
When I first heard 'The Catalyst', I hated it. Really hated it. But I made myself download the album to try to get used to it. I then found love in 'Iridescent' and was pleased. I went to see them in November last year, and hearing 'A Thousand Suns' live was absolutely mindblowing. The songs were much better live, and my love for LP came back strong. The reaction from the audience to their newer stuff was a lot better than I thought it would be! I can now enjoy 'A Thousand Suns' as I just hear the live version instead. Do I like the transition? I mean, I love how I could put the older stuff up load and get all my anger out, but it's been a while now. The band have grown up like the rest of us. Of course they're going to experiment as music changes all the time. I feel that their new stuff still have that 'Linkin Park feel' to it so that pleases me easily. ![]() When your feet are made of stone And you're convinced that you're all alone Look at the stars, instead of the dark You'll find your heart shines like the sun |

I'll have to go with what everyone else said. I do prefer there older albums over the newer ones, But I do respect the idea of them trying out different styles so they are just not known as another angst-ridden teen band.

*applauds*
I think Linkin Park have gotten better with age. I got into them back when Hybrid Theory came out, and while I did enjoy Meteora, I think it would've been weird if Chester had grown up still yelling "Shut up when I'm talking to you!" when he's not actually mad at the world anymore. Kinda like the way Limp Bizkit have ended up. So I was glad with the Minutes to Midnight transition. That's actually the only LP album which I enjoy every song on, but I think A Thousand Suns is my favourite album overall because it is so cohesive, a lot more experimental, and shows more maturity. They keep growing and I can only respect that in a band. I saw a jounalist call ATS their "Kid A" which I don't quite agree with, but it certainly should be presented as an album as opposed to single tracks. Single tracks worked very well back on Hybrid Theory. Plus, New Divide, a recent song that doesn't sound anything like ATS or MTM yet still becomes a staple in their live shows. Fantastic song. I never really appreciated LP fully until recently, but they know how to write good songs and I can't wait to see where they go next. |

I never really liked them much, but I saw them at Madison Square Garden (I just went for Coheed and Cambria and Chiodos).. but they were amazing. I wouldn't mind seeing them again. I have no interest in learning the lyrics, but they put on a great show.
