What are some good depressing songs? - May 1st 2009, 11:44 PM

I want to find more depressing songs for my ipods so if you could list your fav depressing songs that would be awsome:].

Don't lose who you are, in the blur of the stars
Seeing is deceiving, dreaming is believing,
It's okay not to be okay
Sometimes it's hard, to follow your heart
Tears don't mean you're losing, everybody's bruising,
Just be true to who you are

kt tunstall, through the dark.
i swear all of beyoncés first cd on her new album (for me anyway) - the beyoncé side, not the sasha fierce side.
natasha bedingfield, wild horses (makes me well up everytime.)
michael bublé, lost
james morrison, pieces don't fit anymore
errm.. quite a few more i know..

maybe our relationship isn't as crazy as it seems.
maybe that's what happens when a tornado meets a volcano.
all i know is that i love you too much to walk away.

Nine Inch Nails you mean.

In particular try to find the Quiet version - it's on Further Down The Spiral. The most hearthbreaking singing ever.

It also has a twin (!) - Right Where It Belongs on With Teeth - the original version sends chills down my spine, while as a standalone song I think "v2" is a better mix (moe emphasis on lyrics).

Just a few of my favourites :

What Sarah Said - Death Cab for Cutie
This Womans Work - Kate Bush
Another Year - Amanda Palmer
Pills - The Perishers
The Trick is To Keep Breathing - Garbage
Breathe Me - Sia
Numb - Linkin Park
Circles - Hollywood Undead
Gorecki - Lamb
Good Riddance - Green Day
How to Save a Life - The Fray
A Synonym for Acquiesce - Bayside
Pierrot the Clown - Placebo
That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore - The Smiths
Unlovable - Darren Hayes

Tried to keep this as un-triggering as possible, but they're hardly the happiest songs, due to the title of the thread

What and What Not ~ Bayside

A Time for Yohe ~ Between The Trees

The Way She Feels ~ Between The Trees

Neverender ~ Coheed and Cambria

Dearest ~ One True Thing

Red Sam ~ Flyleaf

I'm Sorry ~ Flyleaf

The Last Night ~ Skillet

Chloroform Perfume ~ From Autumn to Ashes

Face Down ~ Red Jumpsuit Apparatus

Short Stories with Tragic Endings ~ From Autumn to Ashes

A few favorites. Some of these songs aren't exactly depressing; a few of them discuss depressing topics but have positive resolutions (such as "The Way She Feels" and "The Last Night"). Either way, great songs.

I can say that I wanna try.
I feel helpless for the most part,

I'll never get over it,
but I'm gonna try
to get better and overcome each moment
in my own way"

Send the Pain Below--Chevelle
Desert Song--My Chemical Romance
Hold The Door--Armor For Sleep
I Miss You--Blink-182

Yesterday I saw you kissing tiny flowers
But everything that lives is born to die
And so I say to you that nothing really matters
And all you do is stand and cry.

Pretty much everything by Bright Eyes, haha.
Tears Don't Fall - Bullet For My Valentine
You Won't Hear This - Envy On The Coast
Poetic Tragedy - The Used
Dark Come Soon - Tegan and Sara
Pieces - Sum 41
Whiskey Lullaby - Brad Paisley
Dirty And Left Out - The Almost
Keep Yourself Warm - Frightened Rabbit
Waves Goodbye - From First to Last
Worry Rock - Green Day
Thinking Of You - Katy Perry
Good With You - L.P.
Salty Eyes - The Matches
Messes of Men - mewithoutYou
Broken Heart - Motion City Soundtrack
Cancer - My Chemical Romance
Without You - Jonathon Larson [from the Rent soundtrack]
Broken - Seether
Home As A Romanticized Concept Where Everyone Loves You - Woodpigeon

These are the ones that get me all emotional. I didn't check to see if I repeated any, so sorry if I did.

I lost myself in the space between heaven and hell.

Re: What are some good depressing songs? - May 5th 2009, 10:58 AM

Okay I'd like to recommend Joy Division (1976-1980). The frontman, Ian Curtis, suffered from epilepsy and depression when there was no real treatment. The experimental drugs he took for epilepsy made him angry, depressed, and very sensitive to the slightest things. It also made his overall health very weak, and his epilepsy caused him to pass out on stage. He married at 20, and already had a daughter by the time he was 22. However, he married too young and fell in love with another woman but didn't divorce his wife because of the baby. His wife eventually found out, and they argued all the time and she said she was going to divorce him. Depressed, realizing his epilepsy was getting worse and taking control of his life while his family was breaking apart, he hung himself at the age of 23. All of his lyrics have recurring themes of isolation, losing control, hopelessness, love lost, the list goes on. Definitely among the most depressing and emotional singers of all time. He shows how sad he is but not in a self-indulging way.

Joy Division was the first post-punk band, combining the minimalism of punk but focusing on mood and atmosphere for power, instead of relying on pure anger.

Love Will Tear Us Apart

^about his wife leaving him

Transmission
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rdf9gxp-_4A
^ Ian puts everything he has into the song, you can see him being physically drained and just shouting lyrics as the song reaches climax.

Ceremony

^last song he wrote before he killed himself. This track sounds desperate, plus in context it makes the music incredibly haunting.

Sorry but I am a huge fanboy.

Bluest eyes in Texas. . But, that's really only a depressing song if you've seen the movie Boys Don't Cry.

Agreed. Buckley's version > Wainwright's version.

Just some of my favourite sad songs:
Trouble Sleeping - The Perishers (anything by The Perishers, really)
Looking For Love - Michelle Featherstone (again, anything by her)
She Has No Time - Keane
Tiny Vessels - Death Cab For Cutie
Scarlet - Brooke Fraser
For Blue Skies - Strays Don't Sleep
Ache - James Carrington

...but I'd trade it all for just a little piece of mind.

erm... a couple of the ones i could think of could be quite triggering...

Dumb - / Nirvana (not sure if it's more depressed or depressing though)
Doll Parts - Hole (it's kinda sad... I love it )
Bring me to Life - Evanescence
And there's an MCR one on Life On The Murder Scene that's quite depressing... just not sure which one it is
A lot of headswim's kinda depressing... the singer's brother drowned, and there's loads of references to that in their music.

Ah I was going to mention that one! Makes me tearful whenever I listen to it!

Here's some of mine:

Wires - Athlete
Sleep Don't Weep - Damien Rice
When We Die - Bowling For Soup

And possibly the saddest song in the world:
Yellow Butterfly - Meg & Dia
