Am I alone here? - May 5th 2009, 06:58 PM

I am such a music elitist, I am so shallow where I can hardly talk to people who have boring music tastes. I'd rather go to church for three hours every day than listen to a single Nickelback song. A girl who I enjoy talking to said she loved DMB and I was like "...oh. okay I guess" when I wanted to smack her. How can I be so shallow? I don't think I am narrow minded, I have a diverse taste (I hate people who say 'I like everything' though because they don't), I like indie, hip hop, hardcore/emo, (post-)punk, metal, grunge, folk, avantgarde, I even own a ton of techno music.

Bands I despise...

PEARL JAM
Slipknot
Lil Wayne
Panic! At the Disco
My Chemical Romance
Dropkick Murphys
Green Day
Papa Roach
Nickelback
Dave Matthews Band
Soundgarden
Audioslave
Rage Against the Machine
Simple Plan
Blink 182
Avenge Sevenfold
Dragonforce
All American Rejects
Oasis
The Fray
Coldplay
Kayne West
Muse
Tool
Creed
Kiss
Foo Fighters
Dream Theater
Korn
Guns N Roses
AC DC
System Of A Down
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Linkin Park
almost every boring guitar hero (Satriani, Malmsteen, etc.)
any diva post 1990 (ie Beyonce)
any of those bands that EVERY guy hates (ie Jonas Brothers)
any Christian Rock Music
any Happy Hardcore

and of course, the present U2 (I like their first two albums though)

...that's just off the top of my head. There is so much more music I really can't stand. I also realize that everyone probably has at least one band up there I hate. Is this because I am a musician, or I listen to too much music, or what? I can't help but being a music snob, I care too much about it.

...and to state the title of the topic

Am I alone here?

Hey!
I love music and I honestly do love every type of music [ not all the artists who play that music however]
But maybe you are putting to much emphises on music to determine wether you like people or not. You could be missing out on some really cool people
You dont have to listen to the music these people like but give the person a chance

I am music freak to and I do sometimes think 'ewww that person likes DJ Rankin =/' and I do sadly sometimes brand them with a boring personalily but I have to get over it

Some (or most) of my friends like bands/artists i absolutely despise. But we just take it as a joke really. I mean, it's their music taste and i feel its i cant judge them cause they dont like my music and we have our own tastes. Some people like marmite and some hate it B]

I think you're clearly putting way too much emphasis on music you DON'T like and not focusing enough on whether you like the same bands as other people! Try to stick to what you both have in common!

For example whenever I talk to my punk friend about music it's generally more about light trip hop or synth-pop bands! It's our middle ground...

I guess eventually you might have to learn how to say "well, I may hate their music, but I like a certain part of it.

I'm certainly lucky being a keyboard player as I have a schizophrenic relationship with my instrument (which is generally used in dance...). However I've learnt you can bring anyone over and play a cool sound, and they'll agree it's a cool sound no matter what genres they like. Music is more universal than you think.

I see no reason to not like someone due to their taste in music. People's tastes vary and it's rather silly to judge them based off of that, as their tastes do not necessarily represent the person's qualities. You've listed what you do not like so why not look for what you like.

Thank God I don't like any of that music you listed.

I don't really care how different or similar my partner's preference is when it comes to music. If they constantly play music that I don't like, then I'd have a problem.

If it's constantly playing and they won't stop, then I agree, I wouldn't be the happiest of people. Either they play their stuff quieter, get and use headphones or they leave.

If you dislike Tool then your opinion should be completely disregarded.
But I do agree with most of the other bands.

Oh I didn't mean like it was affecting my social life or anything. I still make friends and stuff, but when it comes to music I am just crazy intolerable.

It was more of a quasi joke anyways, I was wondering if there was anyone else who is more of an indie kid here?

I'm quite the opposite of an elitist, actually. I know you said that you don't believe it when people say they like everything, but I can tell you right now that I cannot think of a single song, artist, or genre that I truly dislike. The thing is, if people respect your right to hate music that they like, then you should respect their right to like music you hate. And yes, I'm more of an indie kid by the way.

I'm sure you're not alone but I have to say I like a lot of bands on that list but I like most types of music except the screamo stuff where you can't actually tell what they're saying.

Yeah same. I can't understand anyone under the age of 30 not liking RATM O.o and I find happy hardcore quite uplifting. It's the only type of music that can never make you feel down.

And you like "metal" but you don't like

Ah, ok. Yeah I'm sure you can find a sub-genre for those, like something close to death/black metal? I dunno.

I'm the same. I feel the same way! I can't STAND people who sing all the songs on the radio, and nothing else. It's like... "Wow. You're musically challenged." They don't take the time to listen to everything, instead they just sing all the top songs. I want to slap them as well I hate it when people use lyrics for their sig. It's like, "Wow, couldn't think of anything else, huh?"

I actually like some of the bands you put up. But not THAT many.

You listed the bands that you dispise but what bands do you like?

You should try not to be so judgemental when it comes to music. You could be missing out on good relationships. A person's music taste is such a small percentage of who they actually are.

You remind me of so many people who harshly judge others just because of what they listen to. And personally, I don't really like that. A person who acts like that comes off as being conceited (as if they are "music experts") I don't know you but that's how you came across to me.

I agree with iamverybeautiful. Don't let differences isolate you from what could be a great relationship. If you don't really like your partner's taste in music, try exposing them to other genres and see if they like it. Don't bash them for not knowing the same bands you do.

It's not affecting my social life, but I am noticing that I am just frustrated when someone puts on some stupid song.

It's just something that matters a lot to me, because music is a huge part of my life. I play in gigs, mix friends music, make my own, etc. and I listen to an endless amount of new bands. Maybe it is arrogance, but my ego is so blind to it so I don't actually see it?

Okayyy... what do you listen to? It looks as if you hate every band in the world. I can understand not liking songs obviously overplayed on the radio and such. But... I've never once heard a Muse song on the top 100 hits station. In fact, the songs I hear people singing that are 'popular' are not sung by any of the bands you listed up there.

I would say not liking someone because of their music interest is ridiculous, but to be honest I think everyone is more interested in getting to know someone who has similar tastes in music as themselves. But still. I think you're crazy for hating MUSE. And ACDC? They're like rock God's. But. Although I think your completely insane for not liking some of those bands, I still think you're a decent person

But I think you should learn to respect that everyone has different taste in music.
