Okay Sammie. [: One to two minutes is going to fly by. I'm really excited that you're taking your dancing to the next level. I'm very passionate about dance, so I'm super happy to help you however you need it.

A) You need to find out whether this dance has to be choreographed by you or if it can be choreographed by anyone. If it's the latter of the two, I highly recommend to either get a friend already in the class to help you choreograph it or maybe YouTube a "So You Think You Can Dance" solo and modify that a little. I say this because, judging from your post, I'm assuming you're not very experienced in choreography.

2) What kind of dance do you want to do? Since you're wanting to do your solo to a slower piece, I'm *assuming* you're looking to do either a contemporary/lyrical dance or a slow, nitty gritty jazz dance. If you were looking for an upbeat song, I bet you could go with hip hop or more traditional jazz, though. [: I don't recommend that you do tap or kick because you aren't really able to show as much versatility and skill there, in my opinion.

Here are a few songs that I've either danced to, choreographed to, or have had friends choreograph to that might be fun for you.

Contemporary:

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jw73gHiR96M - This is a clip of "Fully Alive" by Flyleaf [acoustic version]. This song is very emotional, so it's pretty easy to get into it, in my opinion. If you need help coming up with ideas or moves to this one - let me know. I just choreographed a piece about nine of us did in a show last night.
  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJx5Pp-0cZY - This is "Cannonball" by Vienna Ting. I learned a dance to this last year; it's a very cool song to dance to if you want to check that out!
  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_Xkf6gLkrI - This is "Second Chance" by Shinedown. It's a little more mainstream than the others, so I'm sure you've heard it before. This song has been one of the most fun songs I've ever choreographed to. It's very fun, and the build up to the chorus is incredibly awesome, if you can manipulate that to work to your advantage. [:
  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ePyRrb2-fzs - This is "Apologize" by Timbaland. It's also a bit more mainstream than those first too. I'm pretty passionate about a dance I learned to this one two years ago. You can really dance to the words in this one, which is cool.
Jazz [slow]:

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0xvEMYBrcc - "Magick" by Ryan Adams & The Cardinals. I'm not sure why I put this one in the slow jazz category, but I think you could do a really awesome cool jazz dance to this; a couple of my friends did a dance to this and it looked really awesome, partially because the music awesome is so awesome. I really like the "burned up, to the ground, zombies runnin' all around" lyric - I think that could be something awesome.
  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHuebHTD-lY - "Black and Gold" by Sam Sparro. I learned a dance from Tyce Diorio to this song and I think I can possibly say that it's the most fun, amazing jazz dance I've ever done in my life. You can really work with the hits in the music for this song.
And if you decide you want to go for a fast song, I have some suggestions for those too.

Jazz [Fast]:

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GeewJPUcztg - "Kill the Lights" by Britney Spears. Don't rule this one out just because it's by Britney! I learned a dance from Nick Florez to this one, and we all had a whole lot of fun performing it. If you really get into it, you could do a really awesome hip-hoppy jazz dance to this.
  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ngf5Oo_XrjI - "Poker Face" by Lady Gaga. This one is very mainstreamed, so I'm sure you've heard of it. This song could produce a really fabulous traditional, fast, upbeat jazz dance if you wanted to go for that. The only thing about doing mainstream songs is that everyone knows them, so you have to make sure the dance is as good as the music. Weird concept, I think. ;S
Hip Hop:

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0cKnTLrDbcw - "Boom Boom Pow" by Black Eyed Peas. Did a hip hop dance to this last night and had so much fun with it! I'm not sure if you're a hip hopper, but if you can do it, I'd be super interested to see what you'd come up with. [: I really love to see other people's choreography.
  • Most other hip hop songs are mixes. Barry Youngblood has some really amazing hip hop mixes that he sells on his website if you want to Google that and have time to maybe look into that a little further.
So, as you can see, I'm kind of obsessed with dancing. Which doesn't necessarily mean I'm any good at it [I cannnnot judge myself], but just that I do it probably every day for multiple hours a day and love it a ton. [: Again, let me know if you need help with anything or have any more questions and I'll do my best to help you out. Hopefully some others here can also give you their own opinions and insight. Good luck with your audition! I'm sure you'll do great. [:

PS: Since I guess you're primarily looking for song choice, I'm going to move this to Sports and Entertainment. ^^
