If you're an expert with R&B music, I have a challenge for you... - May 14th 2009, 09:13 PM

So, I have this R&B song stuck in my head. I normally don't listen to rap/r&B/hip hop music, because I don't like songs about sex, stealing, killing, etc...

The tricky part about this is that it's a lot more complicated than going into google and typing in the lyrics... I can't recall any of the lyrics...

Actually, there is very little about the song that I do know. This what I know for sure

  • The refrain (or repeating theme in the song) has a fast to medium tempo rap (don't know any of the words), and the music is slower.
  • I can think of only three notes that are sequential (starting low and building up). The first note is held out, and the other two follow one after the other.

That's it.

Here's what I think I might recall about the song...

  • For some odd reason, the songs "Beautiful" and "I'm so Paid" by Akon remind of this one song, but neither of them are the winner
  • I believe the three notes I mentioned above are made by a similar instrument/device as in Usher's "Yeah" (the repeating music throughout "Yeah" is played by a similar instrument to what exists in my mystery song...)
  • This is almost just stabbing at thin air, but for some reason, I think the song might be one of those remixes of an older, 80s/90s song. For example... White Dawg's "Right Here Waiting" is a redone version of an older song. Additionally, White Dawg's song is also a good acoustic example, because it demonstrates what I mean by "fast rapping and slow music."
  • I believe this is a sad song. Either the girl died, broke his heart, cheated on him, something like that. I know that it's not a sexual song, because I don't usually like those, and this one I really liked.

Any thoughts??? I know... I don't have a lot to offer as far as hints

Hmmm.... I'm not really an R&B expert, as it were.
But, where'd you hear it?

Did the singer/rapper have any sort of accent?

Tryyy Dead & Gone, and Heartless... thats what came to mind when you said it was sad/ about a girl.

Was the vocal melody very repetitive? Or was it really just straight rapping?

I don't know R&B, but I do know that It might be Brian McKnight?

I listened to some Brian McKnight songs, and I don't think the song I'm looking for is by him...

Not that I recall.

Good question. I believe it was mostly straight rapping, not a lot of repetition, but honestly, I could be wrong.

Sounds like it could be Fort Minor - Where'd You Go.

Don't hold me to that though because it's just a guess.
