I'm not much of a fan of Indie music but I do like a bit of Kings Of Leon from time to time if that counts?

Gotta say i love kings of leon too. But are they still to be considered indie since they're getting so mainstream now?

Indie music is less about not being mainstream and more about being seperated from major commercial record labels and having a DIY attitude. It's hard to describe though, because while Kings of Leon were obscure for about 7 or 8 years, they're still a part of Sony Music. It's really up to the individual to decide what they see as indie, but some of my favorite indie artists are Sufjan Stevens, Jeffrey Lewis, Noah and the Whale, The Mountain Goats, Spoon, Belle and Sebastian, and of course Aberfeldy.

I agree with you, I think indie could encompass bands like Radiohead and the Flaming Lips. Both of these bands just release whatever albums they want (Radiohead ditched EMI), they have a very DIY attitude. Obscure bands that follow trends and try to get a label are not indie.

In reality though, indie is now just a marketing term.

Yeah, I agree with you. A lot of groups see that the idea of indie is attracting fans that actually go out and buy albums, so they just label themselves as an indie group.

Re: Indie music! - June 8th 2009, 08:57 PM

Yep, just like alternative used to be an alternative to the mainstream in the late 80s early 90s....like this, something that feels angry and fresh even today

(Dinosaur Jr. - Fury Little Things)
YouTube - Dinosaur Jr -Little Furry Things

now alternative means (some 20 years later)

(Pearl Jam - Gone)
YouTube - Pearl Jam - Gone

some of the most boring and safe music possible, how this mainstream drivel is considered alternative is beyond me

Well, at least we'll always have those groups to go back too. I didn't start listening to dinosaur jr. Until this year when I heard broken social scene play a cover of the wagon

Love indie music. Have to say I'm a Sufjan fan. Personally, I like The Planet Smashers, The Proclaimers, Joseph Arthur, The Decemberists and ShitDisco best.
