NPR, The Writer's Almanac - January 16th 2009, 11:56 PM

Does anyone in the US listen to this? It's at 6:35am, so I doubt it but...

It's my favorite thing about waking up early. I love the way Garrison Keillor reads poetry, and seriously I plan my morning just so I can catch this on my car, even if it means hanging in the library for no reason. I usually look up the poem he'd read that morning.

Here's a poem from a few weeks ago that struck me, if anyone listened then:

Illustrated Guide to Familiar American Trees

by Charlie Smith

I don't get it about the natural world.
Like, greenery,
without people in it, is supposed to do what?

City sunlight, I say, how can you beat itó
the walk to the pool after work, shine
caught in the shopkeeper's visor, bursts.

I see myself moving around New York,
snapping my fingers, eating fries.

My ex-wife's out in California.

I wish she was over on Bank Street,
up on the second floor,
and I was on the way there
to call to her from the sidewalk.

There's a cypress on that block, two honey
locusts and an oak. I love those trees
like my own brothers.

Here's the WEBSITE, if you guys are curious

I am waylaid by Beauty. Who will walk
Between me and the crying of the frogs?

I have listened to NPR, but am not an avid listener.

How did Mandela get the will to surpass the everyday,
When injustice had him caged and trapped in every way,
How did Ghandi ever withstand the hunger strikes and all,
Didn't do it to gain power or money if I recall,
It's to give; I guess I'll pass it on
