As of early April 2024, online play and other functionality that uses online communication will end service for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U software. Thank you very much for your continued support of our products.

The end of an era! I wasn't allowed video games growing up but these always looked so fun. For some reason I thought they'd already turned off the 3DS.

I've never had a Nintendo or Wii, but I remember that when I was a teen some people had Just Dance on Wii and we would spend time at parties dancing together ;D

That sucks. I have Super Mario Maker for the Wii U since 2015 and was very excited about the custom levels made by people with more artistic talent than I. But I am not a big gamer and it ended up just sitting on the shelf since then. I guess I lost my opportunity to fully enjoy the game. Fortunately there is one for the switch but then I have to go buy it.
I am honestly pissed at Nintendo about the disaster that was the Wii U. It offered nothing much new, was difficult to set up (hence the games sitting for years), and then because few people bought it , they re-released "deluxe" versions of these games on the switch: essentially punishing the people who bought the shitty Wii U. If I had known all the good games for Wii U would be re-released in improved style just a few years later for the switch, I would have never got my Wii U. I would have just waited for the switch. There is no Mario Kart 9 for the switch for me to enjoy because they just re-released Mario Kart 8.

3DS and Wii U were both dumb systems. For whatever reason, 3D was a huge fad in the early 2010s and many people were buying 3D TVs for their homes. 3D suddenly became all the rage. Popular movies like Tron and Avatar were being released in 3D. Tron didn't even have that great of a story, but had some of the best special effects ever seen at the time. The 3DS offers 3D without 3D goggles because the screen actually is arranged in a way that shows a slightly different picture to each eye- simulating depth. Then the 3D fad died and they came out with the cheaper 2DS.
Wii U was an absolute pain to set up. You needed this awkward gamepad (that was supposed to be a gimmick, but ended up just being annoying) that needed to be charged, wii controllers, the wii dock, and of course all the wires that go into hooking up to the TV (because despite the gamepad, you needed the TV as well!). I believe that the Wii U was nintendo's worst selling system. I have it all somewhere but I'd have to look for all these components just to play a game. So my system was rarely used. Mario Party 10 was a good game though.

I have a wii and a Nintendo ds and still use both but they aren’t connected to the internet and still will work once they go offline as such. I also recently got a Nintendo switch. I know they are shutting the Xbox 360 servers down soon too which is sad as my Xbox 360 is like what evolved my gaming experience. Before the Xbox 360 I was playing ps2. I do however also have an Xbox one. Yes I’m a big gamer haha I also have a gaming tablet .
I guess they have to shut servers down from time to time as games consoles evolve and people move with times and technology,

It makes me remember how my best friend was so excited to get her pastel pink DS, and I followed on my birthday a few months later. We spent lots of time on that, and later, on the Wii as well. The end of an era is always sad.

We didn't play video games growing up and I hope everyone else enjoys playing them.
