Apple unveils the iTablet

Apples latest invention, the iTablet.

What are your views and what do you think? Will this be a sucsess or a big flop?

Re: Apple unveils the iTablet

I personally think it's a bit of a disappointment. I mean, it's just an over-sized iPhone. Even the biased tech blogs I read were disappointed by some of the omissions. No multi-tasking with such a powerful processor?

I don't think it will flop because it has Apple's name on it, and also because the iPhone has been so popular that the iPad probably will. But I just think they could have innovated far more.

Well that's one thing I won't be buying, after all the disappointments I've had with my iPhone I'm not buying any more Apple products.
Besides, it looks a bit big for a PDA, that's what it's supposed to be right?

I'm not going to be getting it. If I had that kind of money, I'd most likely get a laptop or a desktop I don't have to share with my family. I personally think it's not going to be all it's cracked up to be.

I absolutely agree. If I were to buy a tablet, I would want a full functioning computer interface with MULTITASKING abilities.

I thought it was called an ipad, not an itablet. What is the proper name?

^It is the iPad.

Re: Apple unveils the iTablet

It will be a marginal success...

It should be priced lower.. because apple would probaly make about... 200 to 300 dollars per unit. But then again its an apple product or an oversize ipod.

its nice and all i have to admit. i would get one... if i was rich. Im not poor, i have a good lump sum in the bank and expect to make more money and save more. but this is just a giant toy. I rather buy a laptop/tablet than this. because it would be more useful.

I actually own an ipod touch. and i love it.

The only reason why i bought the i touch is because it wouldn't really compete for my attention with my laptop. but my problem with the itouch is the lack of functionality... like you cannot even watch Hulu.com! or play addictinggames.com or anything else that needs flash. because apple is too greedy! they are afraid that flash systems will steal apples thunder buy reducing their sales for apps.

Re: Apple unveils the iTablet

Honestly, a netbook is so much more useful than this. Getting an iPhone (or better yet an Android phone) and a netbook wouldn't cost much more than an iPad, and the functionality would be so much greater. An iPhone can do most of what an iPad can, but it is portable, pocket able and can do a lot the iPad can't (phone calls, pictures, etc). The netbook also does a lot the iPad can't. It can multi-task, has a full keyboard, possibly better battery life, Flash video on the web, a full desktop OS for productivity, etc.

Overall, I think the iPad is filling a niche that no one really needs filled.

I totally agree with you there Cody. I'm also resisting the urge to say 'That's what she said' in relation to your last statement >.>.

It seems like another apple gimmick...I mean, the ipod touch seems quite cool, and if I could will money into existance using my brain, then I'd get one. As it stands, I can't, so I wont'. >.>

I think it's completely ridiculous, and way too expensive. I mean starting price is $500, like wtf? It's just like an iphone pretty much. Apple doesn't impress me. I won't be purchasing anything from them anymore.

Okay, seriously!

The computer is for internet.
iPods are for music.
Cameras are for pictures.
Cell phones are for phone calls.

Why do I need one thing for everything? It's too weird!!!

I have an iPod Touch, and it allows me to go online. Personally, I hate going online with it. It's far too hard to type, and I hate using the mobile version of most websites. It's way better to use the computer, so I definitely won't be buying one of these things.

I totally agree with that!

That's something where Apple would be making big dollars, and all the Apple fanboy/girls would be all over that.

It's something I would probably consider buying.

I totally agree there, Amanda. People freak out when they find out that I can't send pictures or video (or take them) on my phone and that I don't text anybody. What's up with all of this consolidation of devices?

I personally like having a smartphone because I can lie in bed at night and text my girlfriend, then seamlessly switch to a web browser and surf TeenHelp, then log into MSN, look something up on Google, take a call etc. All at the same time (multi-tasking is for the win) and while I am in bed, or in the car (not driving) or in a waiting room at the doctor.

I actually spend more time using the internet on my phone than on my computer XD It's just nice not to be stuck to a computer. I can check TH, FB and several other sites quicker on my phone than on a full sized desktop.

I still think that the iPad is trying to be a netbook, when it is not even in competition with them. It's basically an iTouch without any of the benefits of an iTouch, specifically it's small size.

Re: Apple unveils the iTablet

The thing is, I can see something similar being useful (in certain occupations). Like in health care, you always see in movies that in the future the nurses and doctors have there clipboard sized touch screen tablets, and in that sort of situation I can see something like an iPad being useful. I can see it being useful possibly to paramedics, because (at least here) the heart rate monitors and all that they carry around for patients are kind of bulky (unless you're one of the lucky paramedics with one of the new laptop sized ones).
But for practical everyday use, I can't see it catching on very well. Maybe if it had the ability to dock with a computer and be used as a monitor? And then the ability to be undocked and used as a small laptop?

Yea, I can see where this would be the case. Though the capacitive screen wouldn't be very friendly to a stylus for writing notes, and as a 'clipboard' is seems kind of awkward to hold it up and use the keyboard. I can definitely see what you're saying, though that isn't exactly the mass market Apple generally caters to.

Re: Apple unveils the iTablet

Yah I can't see Apple doing it. If someone like Sony were to try though, I could see it working out. Making it more of a stylus oriented product instead of a touch screen or something along those lines.

Re: Apple unveils the iTablet

Well, ASUS, HP and Archos are all supposed to be releasing their own tablets in a similar vein to the iPad, only with real OSes. One of those might work for what you're suggesting.

I draw the line with an iPod when it comes to dealing with Apple products.

No handwriting recognition? No speech recognition? No handsfree operation? No web cam? No USB to move pictures from camara to Ipad? No sale.
:p

While I do have criticisms (such as no multitasking and a touch-screen keyboard) I am starting to realize this thing has potential to sell well. Only time will tell.
