Problem with streaming videos -
May 21st 2013, 02:04 PM
My internet speed isn't fantastic but it shouldn't stream this badly. Depending on the time of day streaming a video will be ridiculously slow. Yesterday I couldn't even stream a 360p video on youtube without it stopping constantly. Right now I'm streaming a 720p video and it's fine :|
I don't know why. I can browse the internet fine and download things fine. My internet just seems to hate streaming.
Can I do anything to improve it? I'm using Mac OS X Mountain Lion btw, I'm not on Windows.

It could be the bandwidth of the video server that is causing the issue. You mentioned that it was worse at certain times of the day. If you're accessing the video at the same time as lots of other people, it could make it slower.
I don't think it's anything to do with your Internet connection. There could be certain setting you have enabled on your Mac or Internet browser that are affecting it though. Are you using Safari, or a different browser?

I agree with Gareth. Since you mentioned it depended on the time of the day I would gander a guess that it's a bandwidth issue. The way traditional internet works it will slow down if there are too many people online at once.
Think of the internet like a road. If you're the only person on that road you can fly down it as fast as you can without obstacles, however when there are say 1000 other people on the same road as you trying to get to the same place (your video for example) all of a sudden it takes you much longer to get to where you're trying to go. That's how bandwidth works, the more people trying to get online with you the slower the video will go.

In that case, it's hardly Firefox either. It's definitely the video server's bandwidth. Like Richard said, the video will load slower if more people are trying to access it at once. So, at peak Internet traffic times, you could be in a queue of dozens of people trying to watch the same video.
I've had similar issues with YouTube for years. Considering it's popularity, it's actually a pretty crappy video service.
I don't know if it may help you or not, but you can always check out the link I gave you and see if it helps you out in anyway.
Have you tried streaming videos in all of the browsers you have available? If not, I suggest you try that out as to see if the browser is the issue. If the browser is not the issue, then it could be the internet connection. You must have a high-speed internet connection.

ooooh, okay. I just disabled my adblock on youtube and it seems to be streaming faster <3 I don't know if I'm just having a good day or if it is just streaming faster.
Thank you <33333
