TH Freezing - May 2nd 2009, 03:07 PM

My first Tech thread!!

Before you tell me to put this in Bugs and Suggestions, I don't think it is a bug exactly. It may be my computer.

Okay, TeenHelp has never frozen up on me until a few days ago and it was only on my laptop. It never does it on my home computer. On my laptop, I have wireless internet and it is always slow. I would blame it on my slow connection, but it never freezes when I am on another site. Also, my laptop runs slower at the library than at home even though I get more bars at the library. Could you help shed some light on this situation?

Edit: Chat freezes up on me too, it just logged me out automatically and it has been freezing on me lately whenever I get on and it's all on my laptop.

Yeah, chat has all of a sudden began freezing on me too. I go there and it just freezes my browser and then I close it and go back again and it keeps happening. It's annoying.

It's not only chat but sometimes it is the whole forums...I'm not sure if it is my computer or what...

Re: TH Freezing - May 2nd 2009, 07:07 PM

If chat's freezing then perhaps update to the latest version of Java? The link to do so is:
http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp

Regarding TeenHelp freezing. Is it the site itself that seems to slow to a standstill or does your actual browser freeze?

Also, about the laptop being faster at home despite having more bars:
The bars you're looking at is just how fast your computer talks to the router, that's the device that talks to the internet. But these speeds are all really high anyway, so it makes a minimal difference.
That internet connection could be fast, or be fast but with loads of people using at the same time, like I suspect it is at the library, which slows it right down.

Re: TH Freezing - May 2nd 2009, 07:25 PM

I have already updated to the latest version of java...and considering that the freeze only happens when I am on TeenHelp, maybe it is the site itself that seems to slow to a standstill.

Edit: What I meant is that chat does load for me but sometimes it freezes and logs me off...

I too have the latest version of Java and it still doesn't load for me, the chat that is. The site itself never freezes.

Does it hang at the Loading... screen? Check if there's a Java Update waiting to be installed (little icon on the bottom right of the screen). Otherwise mabye you didn't allow Java Updates (I had to upgrade to 1.6r4 to get chat working...)

Nope, there's no icon. And when I go to download the latest version of Java, it tells me I already have it. So I dunno what the hell is going on. It's annoying. Maybe it's a laptop thing because on my other comp, just a desktop, it works fine. But doesn't here on my laptop.

Chat freezing and logging you off is not out of the ordinary. It happens randomly to everyone.
As for the site freezing, I echo Janos question about whether site freezes or the browser. Next time you encounter a freeze, just click one of the menu buttons at the top of the browser window. If it's the browser, it won't open as fast as normal, if at all. If it does open, it is the site lagging.
I have had a little bit of lag with loading the forum index, but nothing more than 3 or 4 seconds so it doesn't really matter - I put it down to server load.

Holly, make sure you've installed the right one. You're looking for the one labelled JRE (Java Runtime Environment (or something)). If you have that one, clear out your Java Cache, browser cache and cookie.

I think it is the site that freezes because my computer does not freeze when I am on any other site.

I do have that version... How do I clear out all that stuff you mentioned?

Just for the record I have Java fully updated and I got the problem again... once. Since everything's been working fine. Fairly erratic. Unfortunately I've far too much to do (damn Sony!) to figure this out.

So I cleared everything you told me to Silver, and it still doesn't work. I sware it's because of Vista.

Don't be bashing Vista now. I've got the same PC as yours and it's working fine.

From the sounds of it,it's something with your browser. What browser do you use?

A browser is any program you use to surf the internet, like Internet Explorer, Safari or Firefox. What program do you use?

I'd sing you a song, but I'm feeling quite off
in my heart; it's occupied,

and now's not the time.

Ah, internet explorer has a tendency to be quite buggy and do random things like freezing particular sites.
I recommend that you use firefox instead, it's so much faster and has alot less problems.

That site will give you instructions =)

I don't think I am allowed to...I guess I would have to deal with it?

Thing is, it only happens on my laptop and when it has a slow connection. You may be right though.

Hm, how come you're not allowed to?
If it's someone who you have to run by any software you install, tell them about Firefox, and about how it does everything Internet Explorer does and more, just better.

p.s. I'm not a firefox fanboy, I swear >.>
