Google Chrome Problem - August 28th 2014, 01:19 PM

So I've just got up and opened Chrome but something was off, it looks different. After a few minutes I realised the font has changed.

It's not all the fonts but it's the font in places such as my Facebook news feed or the Forums list on here.

I've never changed the font so I'm not sure how this happened. I found out what the default font settings are but when I go into the font settings on Chrome they're already set as the default so why has the font changed?

The only other thing I can think to do is to reset the whole browser but that means I'll be losing data and cookies and it'd be a hassle for me to go manually change all the settings back again so I'd rather leave that as a last resort.

Anybody know anything else I can try first?

Re: Google Chrome Problem - August 29th 2014, 01:05 AM

The only reasons I can think of for this (other than sites changing their CSS, which seems improbable) are an external font service going down - unlikely since websafe fonts are used on the sites you mentioned; a file being deleted from your computer - which is possible, but fairly improbable, but you could try viewing the sites in a different browser to rule this out; the sites looking different because you've got the browser on a different zoom than usual - you can check and change this in the top right hand corner of the browser.

If those don't work, and no-one else has any ideas, your best bet will probably be to check extensions, cookies, etc. and reset them.

I ended up resetting the settings a few hours ago but everything is still looking different. After resetting all the extensions were disabled so it's not one of those either :L

I just checked on a different browser and the fonts on there look normal to me so it's just Google Chrome being a pain it seems.

If they're using the same new font, what is it? You could potentially try going to your Control Panel (I'm assuming you're on Windows 7/8/8.1) and disabling that font under Appearance and Personalisation.

I thought I was going crazy, I said that the Forums looked different and everyone else said they looked normal.
I have no idea what this is but you're not alone. If you find a fix for it, let me know. I don't like this change.

Are you both using Windows 8?

And also can someone post a screenshot of it a) in Chrome b) in any other browser except MSIE (which I trust you'll both have obliterated from your systems ), for the purposes of satisfying my curiosity as much as anything?

Re: Google Chrome Problem - August 30th 2014, 06:39 PM

I'm using Windows 7.

Big screenshots incoming:

This is what the forums look like to me on Chrome:

And this is what they look like on Maxthon:

I realise they still look very very similar but the character spacing on Google Chrome is just slightly different than on Maxthon and the forum descriptions font is smaller, that's what's bothering me.

I was going to screenshot facebook but I can't be bothered to blur out all the names and pictures >.>

This came about as the result of a Chrome update as far as I know, it is intended to happen by the looks of it.

Personally, I'm used to it now.

The font rendering for the Windows build of Chrome was improved by using DirectX to handle the font rendering.

If you don't like it you can disable it by going into the address bar and typing chrome://flags/#disable-direct-write. There you will see an option to disable it.

Re: Google Chrome Problem - October 7th 2014, 11:57 PM

I have been using a MacBook Pro for the last couple of months and I have been using Google Chrome during that time, too, and I honestly haven't seen any of these differences you have been noticing. Maybe it depends on what browser you are using or maybe even operating system, but I highly doubt the operating system is causing those differences, but it is still a possibility. I haven't had any updates yet for Chrome, but I am using a different computer then you (or maybe even the same computer brand).

The main thing is if the site you are using is working to its optimal peak. Who cares if the font is slightly different. It may bother you and some other people, but if the site is still working despite these slight differences, then you really shouldn't worry about it.
