Nice to see you back!!
I believe I have an idea of what you are talking about but could you clarify so that I can give an explanation/put this thread in the correct forum?
When I saw your post I thought this may be a computer science term because I have taken some computer science classes and I researched and it in fact is however, if you are not referring to computer science than I may be on the wrong path in helping with this so I want to be sure I am correct before I respond.

So canonicalisation basically refers to several URL's that lead to the same webpage. When the SE spiders come along, they're presented with many options and may index an undersireable URL address, which can be damaging to your ranking for several reasons.

You can use a 301 redirect to fix the issue, redirecting from one URL to another (this allows you to keep the link authority and therefore your ranking is not damaged). I believe google have a way of defining a canonical URL now too but I'm not 100% on the process.
