Good yet not expensive iPod alternatives? - May 14th 2009, 09:26 PM

Right. I currently have an 8GB iPod Nano. Thing is, it's completely full. I have way more than 8GB of music in my iTunes, and can't even fit in on my freakin' iPod.

My birthday's next month and I wanted the 16GB iPod Nano, but my parents said no because ''it's too expensive'', which, to be fair, it is.

So, I need an MP3 player, 16GB(or more depending on price I suppose), that LOOKS good, does more than an iPod Nano does and isn't quite as expensive.

Does such a thing exist?

Woah. The Mozaic is awesome. I want one. And the 16GB one is, like $60 less than the 16GB nano.

I'd have to recommend a ZEN (Creative) too :]
If I didn't have an iPod, i'd have a Zen instead. My friend used to have one and I loved it. Alex has provided the link already :]

Actually, many such things exist. iPods are over-priced, over-hyped and really just not as good as everyone thinks.

I will add yet another vote for the quality of Creative products. Also, some other really great brands are Cowon and iRiver.

I personally have a Cowon D2, and I absolutely LOVE it. It is probably a bit out of your price range. You can get an 8GB one for $150 from Amazon and then it has an SDHC card slot that you can get an 8GB card for $20 to put in (allowing a total of 16GB) This can be even more if you get a bigger SD card, up to 40GB with a 32GB SD card I believe. Which is very nice because it gives you the option of upgrading your card for much cheaper rather than getting a new player next time you run out of space. Also, for this price you get an extremely customizable, capable, *touchscreen* player. I highly, highly recommend it.

Google is your best friend in situations like these

Came up when I typed "Cheap MP3 Players: http://www.geeks.com/products.asp?cat=MP3 It looks like there's actually a lot more cheap MP3 Players than you would think. It just takes some internet browsing, but you'll fine something :]

Truth be told, iPod's aren't that great, anyway. MP3's often take different kinds of files, have speakers built in, and do all the same stuff that an iPod can, and are more sturdy.

I actually got a 16 gig mp3 off of ebay recently for about twenty bucks. However, it came from china, was very cheap-looking, and I ended up having some technical difficulties with it, and now it's virtually useless But there are virtually endless types of mp3 players, and some of them are very cool, so I'd just take my time with it and make sure you find something you like. eBay is pretty good for finding electronics, as companies occasionally put some of their products out online for cheap to make sure a few people will have them, that way their friends see them and go "oh, cool, what kind of player is that, I want it!"

Now, I know a guy who got this thing called an "MP4", and it is JUST like an iPod touch, just a little thicker, and I'm pretty sure it's some blackmarket shit, but it works pretty good and they sell them online for like $1 on some websites, so just go have a look

I just have to point out here that an MP4 player is a mp3 player that plays MPEG-4 videos as well =P.
Kinda like a portable movie player as well, they're pretty neat.
Also, ebay is your friend =).

And I just want to throw in that if you're getting a really cheap player, remember, you get what you pay for. Just keep that in mind.

I would reccomend savin' up and gettin' an iPod. They are very reliable, and of course, stylish. If you do get a cheap one, be prepared to have lots of problems with it. Good luck!!

Meh, if you save up the money, skip the iPod and get another reputable brand. iPods have less features and overall value per dollar/monetary unit than other comparable players. Only one I'd recommend to certain people is the touch, and that's only if you don't plan on using it for music but want it as a PDA.

My recommendation to just get a Creative. High quality and you can find them in most major stores. (A Cowon or iRiver if you're a bit more adventurous)

Thanks for all of your suggestions, guys. They have been noted and now it's just a matter of deciding. (Which could take a while )
