Slow laptop. - January 14th 2017, 10:25 PM

So I got a new laptop back on Black Friday. It's Windows 10. It's been really slow especially for Firefox and Chrome. Any advice on how to get my laptop to speed up?

Usually when this happens to mine I run a full virus scan and malware scan just to be safe. I would suggest the free version of Malwarebytes, sometimes it finds what it calls PUP (potentially unwanted programs) that aren't dangerous, but tend to slow down your system.

Have you got any unwanted programs on it? Have you downloaded anything weird? You could try reformatting the drive it's generally the most drastic solution but if you know what you're doing it just fixes the problem quickly as you said it's a new laptop you could just factory restore it but make sure you quickly put anything you want to keep on a external hard drive or a USB because it will be lost once restored i'm one of those people who struggles with giving tech advice unless the device is in my hand and im playing with it im sorry if this is the best I can I know it's poor but when I have not got the physical device in my hand I can't pay around with it and work my magic as I am genraully very good with computers but like I said it's a new computer so I doubt you have anything on it just factory reset it saves you going through all the small steps trying to find out why it isn't working and just do the most drastic one and it should fix the solution.

note factory reset wipes your hard drive clean all files will be deleted

I hate when my computer runs slow. The first thing I do is make sure I clear basically all of my browsing data except my saved passwords (history, downloads, cookies, etc.).

Then if that doesn't help speed up my browsers and computer in general I'll run the Disk Cleanup application that's already on the computer. I usually check off every box for it to delete things since it's not any important files.

If that doesn't quite help, then I run an antivirus scan and any other scans my anti-virus program has. I use Avast and it also has a scan that looks for performance issues and that is helpful sometimes.

9 times out of 10 those three things help my computer. If none of that helps, then come back and I will try to think of another solution!

For my laptop, 9/10 times a simple restart solves the problem. IDK why it just does.
Otherwise, just try the usual, antivirus scan, deleting apps you dont use etc etc

Hope it works fine

Thanks guys!

I have done a couple virus scans, did malware bytes, and fragmented my hard drive...... my hard drive was 50% fragmented.. I'm assuming that's the cause of the slowness... xD

Anyways this can be closed, if I have more issues I will post a new thread
