Unhappy Word Document Gone - May 22nd 2009, 04:25 PM

I spent a lot of time yesterday typing up parts of a story and saved it to a word document (I'm using Microsoft Word 2007). I specifically remember saving the document the first time, and continually saving it as I typed. When I was done, I saved changes one last time and shut down my computer. This morning I woke up and it wasn't in recent documents or anywhere I had saved it to. I ran a search on my computer for the name of the document and nothing's coming up, so I just ran a search for one of the words I'm sure was in that document. Nothing.

I don't know what to do. That was 40+ pages of my writing and it's gone!

I don't know if it'll work but you could use system restore and put it back to last night and then check for it again. It might work so it's worth a chance.

If you're using Microsoft Office Word 2007 like you said you did, I do believe that it will periodically auto-save your progress. It did that for me right off the bat after installing Office Home and Student 2007. It was set on 5-10 minute intervals. You would have to go into the Help and Support tab in the Word 2007 application and type in 'auto-save' or something along those lines and it will show you an article to find the auto-save document and that's only if your Word 2007 does the auto-save function. I just assume it's the default settings because it's done that from day one. It's no guarrantee that it would've saved 100% of your progress, but if you were typing on that document for several hours, it would auto-saved most of it at the very least.

As Matt said, your best bet would be recovering the AutoSave file. The defaul location is:
C:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word \

Also, open all the documents in Word's own recent files list, you might have it saved under a different name. Also, is there any possibility you saved it to a removable drive?
And just for safety, check in your recycle bin too.
