Hey!

Firefox, so far as I'm aware, still supports Java. I'm not sure why it would say that it doesn't support Java unless it was a spam/virus pop up. Some other things you can try is clearing your browsing cookies and cache. Since you updated Java, it would also be good to make sure your browser and computer are also up to date. If all else fails, you can reset your browser's settings.

I'm glad Internet Explorer worked for you at least! You can also always reference [this] thread to go down the list of things to do to fix it. Let us know if you are still having trouble with Chat on Firefox after trying those things and we can try to figure out other solutions.

I heard from someone in chat the other day (can't remember who sorry!) who also warned me not to update Firefox because it won't work with chat. I'm not sure there's a way around that other than to downgrade unfortunately.

Re: Firefox chat room issue ? - March 17th 2017, 11:29 PM

That's odd, I just checked Java on Firefox on my laptop and it did not give me that message (I only get that message on Google Chrome).

Make sure you are checking it at this web address [https://www.java.com/verify/]. It will redirect you and you should then click on "Verify Java Version". There's a lot of copycat websites that are not the official website. If that doesn't work, then there may just be a problem with your Firefox. In that case, I'd suggest possibly uninstalling and reinstalling the program.

Edit: Just saw what Nicole posted! It may very well be from the update, actually. Downgrading would probably be a reasonable thing to do in the meantime as it could just be a bug in the update (as I couldn't find any official announcements from Mozilla saying they stopped supporting Java).

Edit #2: Thank you, Nicole!

Here is some more information. Firefox has removed support for how browsers use plug-ins. It won't work if you update Firefox to to version 52. I'm having the same problem as Firefox just automatically updated on me. It's not just you.

Edit: It works with Internet Explorer still.

Re: Firefox chat room issue ? - March 18th 2017, 12:03 AM

Yeah firefox automatically updated me. and then made me update java when I tried to load the chatroom It did not tell me about it not supporting plugins till I had downloaded java etc.... was very annoying. it doesn't seem to work on opera either.... good old internet explorer seems ok now. I think for now on I will just use internet explorer for TH as it works well. I'm not sure if it works on safari as I don't use safari...but as far as I know it works fine on my iPhone on the mobile chat feature.... maybe its time the TH chatroom was made to work with a different programme that doesn't use java I don't know if that's possible? For now I think I will just use internet explorer I'm seeing benefits to internet explorer like its inbuilt spell checker.. it seems to correct me as I type which is like actually really useful as it means I can just like type and not have to worry about it as it automatically corrects me and punctuates things for me. however... I would prefer to be able use firefox rather than having to use three separate browsers as I find twitter works better on chrome... facebook works better on firefox. and chat only now seems to work on internet explorer... so its now 3 browsers to navigate around.

I believe 90% of us are having this issue. I had the same issue, but I reinstalled the 49.0.2 version of Firefox and it works again. Then I turned off auto updates.

I found another workaround for this last night. Firefox has also released an extended support version of Firefox 52 - you can find it by doing a little digging on their website or a Google search now that we know what it's called. It has all the security of the upgraded version, but will continue to support plugins like Java until early 2018.

Anyone got a solution when using Linux? Ubuntu doesn't have an internet explorer kind of thing. I've tried the basic browser, firefox, chrome, and opera and am googling alternatives but it's 10am with no sleep so if anyone has an idea??

Looks like you made it into chat! What did you do, maybe other users who have the Linux platform can do the same thing you did.

I actually went on my phone it works on my phone but thats the only way I could get on. I've looked for solutions for chrome and there's these extensions that make a faux internet explorer on chrome but that didn't even work so

No worries! I've been looking for a browser like safari but it can only be run on Wine on Linux. Luckly I have 2 computers, one of which is a windows one, and I was able to run the chat room after several tinkerings

You must have had your settings set so it updated automatically. You can check by looking under advanced and update. If your settings were set for the top one, then you pretty much gave consent and it updated automatically. It wouldn't have updated otherwise.

I made that mistake on my laptop, I had downloaded it but didn't check the settings so it updated and now I can't use it to get into chat. But on my iMac I had the settings changed so it didn't update.

I, too, am looking for a (long-term) solution under Linux. I do have a browser plugin that will let me view the chat in Mobile form, but obviously this doesn't give me the full interface. If anyone has suggestions, let me know! For now, it seems I will be getting the ESR or downgrading to an earlier Firefox version.

However, in order to fully support all platforms in the future (from what I read on Mozilla's website, Java is essentially deprecated at this point), I'd strongly recommend that TH search for a chat system that is not reliant on Java. I'd be happy to do a little searching at some point if needed.

Right now the best solution I've found is using my cell.
Safari,Firefox and Chrome don't work. I dislike IE with a passion therefore I use my phone. A bit annoying but ah well

I always had it set to the middle option but either the last Firefox update or the OS upgrade changed it to the top one.

Re: Firefox chat room issue ? - April 4th 2017, 07:17 AM

I see the problem is TH is using the old "classic" version of AddonChat, AddonChat v9.0 (Classic).

AddonChat now has a new HTML5 version which doesn't use Java, which they are calling "AddonChat X".

Pricing seems to be similar.

They are recommending everyone switch over to their new version of AddonChat which doesn't use Java.

(I have Firefox 52.0.2 (32-bit) (on the "esr" update channel). Initially it balked saying I didn't have the latest version of Java, and that I couldn't update it. Then for some unknown reason it started working, asking me if I want to run "AddonChat" with the Java coffee logo, and it seems to work, I've no idea why.)

Despite having updates for firefox on my desktop turned off (I've double checked every time I've used it), it still managed to update itself. So, updates were turned off last night and today I have the newest browser and my updates are still turned off.

It works on internet explorer for now. I imagine TH will eventually update to the new addonchat but the site would have to be able to pay the pricing etc.. as TH is free for its users it may not be a simple thing as 'just switching'

It actually might be just as easy as switching. I mean they have the funds to keep the old chat up and also have this domain. All of that costs $$$. If pricing is similar then it shouldn't be a problem. Probably the admin of the website layout might not be quite aware of the issue or the newer alternative.

I can use it with Google Chrome but it's a weird one I'd advise disableing java in the add-ons window in your browser.
