Looking for a good video editing software? - June 2nd 2009, 03:46 AM

Yes, I know I'm a geek.
But I really want some sort of video editing software. I've been looking around online, but I have no idea of what's good and what's not.

What I want to be able to do with it, is put DVDs or videos from my camera onto the computer, and take clips from them and add effects and music to make music videos or just short videos. (Music of my my choice, not lame stuff that comes with it.)

Does anyone know of a good program?

Have you heard of Sony Vegas Pro? It's a pretty good video editing software, I've messed around with it a few times at a friends house and has alot of cool different things you can do with it, it can be kind of expensive though. There's also adobe after effects, more advanced but complicated to figure out and much more expensive.

You can google either one to find out more about them =] hope this helps you with what your looking for.

There's Steinberg's Cubase, but it's majorly pricey, but it does the job once you figure out how it works.

I'm most familiar with Adobe Premiere Pro, it's pretty easy to use once you get used to it. It's pricey, but worth it. Final Cut Express is good for the normal user and I think that it's fairly cheap.

Ulead Video Studio. I used the trial version once to make a music video. It is AMAZING.
I hope you find the perfect software. Good luck

Since you haven't specified whether it must be freeware or commercial, here's a bit of both. For commercial, one of the best programs out there is Adobe After Effects, or so I've heard. Unfortunately, it's extremely expensive. Adobe's own website prices it at $999 USD [Link].

You can do a respectable job with a combination of freeware. Personally, for DVD ripping, I use DVDFab but that's commercial.
This WikiHow article shows you how to find DVD Decrypter and rip a DVD with it. It also shows you how to rip it VLC media player (One of the best media players!). There's a DVD Decrypter by DVDVideoSoft here - I haven't used it myself, but I've used other freeware from them and it's worked great.

For editing the video itself, and the sound, I use AviDemux. It's open source and quite powerful. I highly recommend it.

Hope that helps.

Adobe After Effects is a special effects program, not a video editing program. Adobe Premiere Pro/Express is the editing software.

Windows Movie Maker is good for a beginner, but it doesn't let you cut with precision like the pro software.

My bad. I've never used it, but one of my friends can't shut up about how great it is. xD

Sorry WHAT??? Why would you use Cubase for videos?

You can get Adobe Premiere Elements 2.0 on the internet for free (as in legal *free if you know where to look, however I haven't tried it out so I don't know how good it is. Looks like Windows Movie Maker Advanced to me
