Parental blocks... Or something like that? - June 2nd 2009, 04:45 PM

Do I have to have some kind of program installed to have a parental blocks on this computer? Any way that I can block specific sites or anything that might be considered inappropriate? Like with a password or something?

Are you looking to pay or download one for free?

If you pay then I have heard good things about NetNanny. Most of the parents at my moms school use this one.

If you aren't then Blue Coat has a free web control system. K9 Web Protection is used at an elementary school, it is on the computers that aren't part of the school's web blocker program.

Just my 2 cents..3 cents? I forget the term.

Are you using internet explorer?
You can click on tools, then security. There should be a 'restricted sites' button where you can type in the URL of sites you want blocked. It works for me

If you go on "tools" and then go on "internet options" then there should be a tab along the top that says "security" and it has an option of restricting sites. Im on firefox too and thats how I do it on my computer

Well, I downloaded the K9 Web Protection thing and I'm guessing that it's working. After setting it up, I typed in something sexual on Youtube to see whether or not it would block it and it didn't. So I just had to completely block Youtube. I'd rather not have to do that, but oh well.

We've been using net nanny for my niece - you can get a free trial, but eventually you do have to pay for it. You could use it temporarily, anyways. It's worked very well for us - she's the kind of kid that will click on every pop up, try to download everything, and search for any random word that pops into her head, and net nanny has been great at restricting that.

then they will not care how devout you have been,
but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by.
If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them.
If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life
that will live on in the memories of your loved ones."

Re: Parental blocks... Or something like that? - June 3rd 2009, 04:10 AM

The K9 Web Protection is actually working nicely. I can choose certain categories to block and also certain websites to block or keep unblocked. But is there any way that I can get something else that will block keywords on websites? I'd like to be able to leave Youtube unblocked because my husband likes to watch videos about cars and stuff. But I've tested it over and over with different settings and it won't block it if I type in a dirty word to search videos for. For example: If I leave Youtube unblocked and type "boobs", that's exactly what you're going to get... Boobs. Lots of them too. I don't want that.

Edit- Actually I just found an option where I can block certain URL keywords. Is that what I'm looking for, do you think? I want to leave Youtube up, like I was saying, but I want it to filter the searches, if possible. I guess I'll try it and see if it works.

Aha! It worked. I've found exactly what I wanted. Thank you all. =]
