External Hard Drive - June 18th 2009, 03:21 PM

If I got an external hard drive is there a way to plug it into a television and play movies through it?

Also, does this look like a good one to buy :

Unless your TV has an embedded PC inside it, you won't be able to just plug the hard drive in and watch movies from it. You will have to use a pc or a laptop to output video to the TV.
The way it usually works is that a computer has a video out port on the back. The most common one is a VGA port [image] or a DVI port [image].
On your TV, you are most likely to have a VGA port, so you need to connect your computer to the TV. Then you can play it through your TV.
If you don't have a VGA or DVI port, you might have a HDMI port which you can find adapters for to hook it up, or at the bare minimum, component ports [image]. If you find an adapter to match your pc at one end, and the TV on the other end, it will work.

Also, if you have a console like an xbox 360 and a home network, you can play it through that.

You can also get a media center, which is like a DVD player except it has a hard drive instead of a DVD drive. Costly though.
