Xbox Live HELP! - June 27th 2009, 10:22 PM

I've been trying to fix this problem forever and Microsoft Support is no help at all. Basically, I am having problems connecting with certain friends over Xbox live. I cannot join my friends party, and he can not join mine. Whenever I try to do this, I get an error talking about our networks are incompatible, and it says some stuff about NAT. (However, if a third friend invites both of us to his party, it works) My NAT is open, and his NAT is open. So that clearly can't be the problem.

I called Microsoft Support, and they told me to open some firewall ports on my router. I did this, to no avail. The guy at Microsoft told me that the connection wasn't my issue, but his. As much as I want to believe this, I can not connect with over 75% of my friends list. I doubt that that many of my friends have screwed up routers. Can someone please tell me how to fix this??

hmm sometimes when you go through a router this happens because the mac setting is wrong. Xbox live requires a mac setting of at least 1365. I found my router was set to 1500 as default. this was too much. I set it to 1400 and xbox live improved lots. It can effect how well you can join games, join other friends parties, and everything really. If you have a router try doing that. You just enter your ip in the search bar to get to your settings. Or you could also try plugging it directly into the thingy (pardon my terminolgy, the bit the router plugs into that comes from the wall) if it works after doing that then you know the problem is with your router.

edit: I apologize for that I did mean MCU as adz clarified. Silly me. If you're having trouble still you can call the manufacturer of your router.

The MAC thing that Matt was referring to...It's called MTU. What make/model is your router? I could try finding out whether it allows you to change the Max MTU or not.

How do you connect to the router - Wireless or Wired?
Also, do you have Cable broadband or ADSL?

Actually, I'm not sure what types of connections you have in the USA, so here's a simpler way of finding out. Your router should have 3 main connections - the power supply (AC), the primary computer (Ethernet/RJ45) and the Modem (Internet connection). Does your Internet connection use an RJ45 to connect to your router (same type as the router -> computer connection), or is it direct to your phone line?

Also, try setting a static IP. You'll need a bunch of information like your default gateway and DNS servers, which your XBOX will ask you for when you manually set the network connection properties.
If you open up CMD (on your computer) and type in "ipconfig /all", it will tell you all the settings you need. Look for the adapter that you currently use to connect to the internet, then take note of the IPv4 address, Subnet mask, Default gateway and DNS Servers (there are two).
Then go to your XBOX, and manually set the connection properties. For your IP address, use one similar to the one from your computer, but change the last number. For example, if your computer has an IPv4 address of 192.168.0.3, change it to something like 192.168.0.42.
The subnet mask is almost always 255.255.255.0, so pop that in and your default gateway - that is your router's IP address. Then add in the DNS servers and try again.

Re: Xbox Live HELP! - June 29th 2009, 12:33 AM

my router model is a linksys WRT45G

I am wired directly into the router with an RJ45 cable

i dont know if the router is connected to the internet (modem?) with that or a phone line.

i tried setting a static ip but when i tested my connection it couldnt even get to xbox live with it. >:O
