How do I get erase all this? - June 30th 2009, 10:49 PM

(First of all I want to say I'm not sure where to put this thread so I'll keep it here unless a mod thinks it'd be suited somewhere else better)

Ok guys....I'm feeling really dumb about this. ugh

So I've been lookin up publishing agencies. And I (Here's where the dumb part comes in) put out my phone number, email, and (God even more dumb) address.

I got a call from one of the places I requested information about. They tried to talk to me about their company and at first I was like "Yay! I'm going to publish my book" and then ....they started talking about fees...a dead give away that they're a spammer. So I went on a really reputable website who told me that hands down this was a company only interested in taking my money.

So I'm not going to do business with them anymore...but I'm unsure how to like "protect" this information I've given out. I've marked their email as spam and I blocked the number on my phone...but I'm most worried about my address being out there (the dumbest mistake I could have made )

Is there away I can sort of "erase" this. I'm so unsure...I just feel really mad at myself for trusting such a lame site.

Thanks guys
Kaila

Eep, sorry I didn't reply to this earlier... I am going to move it to the technology forum, I think they might have some better answers for you (it has to do with the internet/computer thing.... so yeah )

My advice would be to contact the site and ask them to remove the data. You can block their email too (which I recommend) The address might be an issue, but if they can erase the information, that would be good. Don't feel too guilty about the situation, everyone makes mistakes

I will be moving it now, I hope I helped a little lol.
Message me anytime!

In the UK, there's a Data Protection Act, under which an organisation is not allowed to keep/use your information if you retract permission. If there's a similar law in your state, you could use that to stop them from contacting you or selling it on, which is illegal anyway as far as I know.

Just email them asking for your data to be removed. I did that once and I havent heard from them again (neither by phone, email or home address)...so it might have worked.

I'm just gonna reiterate what others have said, just contact them and ask them to remove all data regarding you that they have.

Also, don't feel bad, we all make mistakes =)
