DVD formats... - July 21st 2009, 03:46 AM

Hi everyone, I want to buy DVDs of an Australian show that isn't broadcast here. I looked on Amazon but they only have the kind that won't work here. Is it possible to get the right format?

I assume you mean they use PAL instead of NTSC.
There are ways to convert PAL to NTSC but it would help if i knew what show you're talking about. If it's popular there are likely NTSC versions somewhere.

That said most DVD players can play both PAL and NTSC, and probably SECAM.

Yeah, sorry I'll be honest I didn't know what it was called. I just knew the DVD players were different so you had to get the right one. The show that I want to get is the Chaser's War on Everything. I couldn't find it on amazon.ca and the ones on amazon.com said "NON-USA" so I figured that meant they won't work?

yeah it just says that because it's PAL. look on your DVD player for the PAL logo or in the manual and see if it plays PAL, if it does, you're good! If it doesn't, then you can convert it to NTSC, but it's not easy.

Alright thanks very much! I have a couple DVD players so hopefully one of them will play it.

If your DVD player doesnt play them, look into buying a multi-region DVD player.. When my brother moved from England to Canada, he brought his DVD collection of about 300 movies. None of them worked in our players (all 6 of them) until my dad bought a multi-region one, then it worked fine.
Good luck!
