Question Is A Laptop Okay When It's Really Hot? - July 26th 2009, 02:22 AM

I've noticed the left side of my laptop gets really hot. I'm almost sure It has a fan, but sometimes I think... Is it going to blow my whole computer? It's Sony Vaio CS. It's thousand dollar ranged laptop.

my girlfriends Toshiba does the same thing.
i think most do get pretty hot after awhile?
she's never had any overheating problems that made a difference in performance.

If your computer has a cooling problem, the best thing to do is get an external laptop cooling fan. They plug into the USB port and sit underneath the computer to keep it cool.
Your laptop can get really hot if you somehow cover the vent as well. If your computer overheats, it can slow system performance and can also ruin the system if it occurs repeatedly. Also, if it gets too hot, it may shut down on you because it's trying to cool itself back down. Getting a cooling pad will save you from the troubles.

Are you using it while laying down on your bed?If you are, you may be blocking the air flow...
Also your batteries could be going bad...check the temperature using the charger and not using the charger. Is there a big difference? Charging bad batteries will heat it up.. Some heat is normal.

Just becareful, when mine got too hot it shut down. So I had to leave it off and let it cool off for 2 odd hours.

My old laptop used to do that so much and scare me.
I never had any problem with it though, it didnt blow up on me..
I'm not sure why it did it.
But as one asked, where are you using your laptop?
Because if you are covering the fan that could be a reason.
Is it always really hot or just after a while?

My laptop does the same when I keep it on my lap or my bed but it doesn't seem to have any problem functioning.

My laptop does that. If you use it when it's on your bed it will make it over-heat. Like others have said, it can slow performance of your laptop and cause it to shut down. The easiest thing to do to stop this is to buy a cooling mat which will stop it overheating. They arent that expensive

Thats a pretty nice laptop, Depends Laptops get hot full stio, Desktops get hot and leave either of them on for to long and yes it will freeze up or shut down, i have left mine on from 11am-11pm thats 12 hours, it was pretty damn hot, but do make sure you give it a rest, if your not on it and know your not going to be on it for a couple of hours, shut it down.

But no it shouldnt blow your laptop up, alot of laptops and desktops have a feature to shut it down when its to hot, but dont rely on it as it wont do it good.

I also have a sony viao and it had some issues. The fan is in fact he left side of the computer. I found that my fan stopped working because a few fan blades broke off and became lodged in the fan. So if it stops entirely than take a small screw driver and open up the back (its not complicated)

You do need to be careful as computers can overheat and fry. I know for a fact that the viao shuts itself down before damage is done, but too much of taking it to the edge like that and it can do serious damage.

Most likely its just a dust build up, which is natural. What you can do is go down to staples, or most any department store like walmart, etc, and buy a can of dust off, or canned air. Then open up the computer, and spray the inside of the fan and the surrounding area. It can be kind of annoying to find a screw driver small enough, but thats probably the only problem I can foresee. Mine worked like new after doing this = ]

Other ways of cooling your computer down are running fewer programs at once, and buying a laptop cooler for your computer to sit on. I'd advice just cleaning the computer, and buying a cooler since it makes it possible to have the laptop in bed and wherever without it losing airflow and overheating.

Just about every computer, as long as you dont mess with the temp settings, will shut down when it reaches a certain temperature... I know my Macbook was getting hot and I downloaded a certain 3rd party app which shows you the temperature, and you can control the fan speed too...

Thing is is my Macbooks metal and so getting up to... 60-70 celcius it begins to burn, but I read up a little on it, downloaded this app, but also fond at least for apples range they call them 'notebooks' not 'laptops' as using them on your lap will cause them to over heat, so now I always but mine on a flat surface where the air flow can flow... easily. Ive also cranked up the speed of the fan and generally average abut 40 celcuis, but it gets any hotter and Ive got an external fan to cool it a bit aswell...

To be honest if it isnt burning you, I wouldnt worry, Itll shut down before it gets dangerous for your laptop, then leave it to cool a while, to prevent it from happening, try not to multi task with programs that will be heavy on the processor, maybe invest in an external cooling system, and also possibly look for an app which you can control fan speed, like possibly this: Speed fan, but I havent tested that or anything, I'd use that as a last resort (:

When mine gets to hot it tends to shut down, and I try to prevent covering the air flow.

yeah, its ok. My toshiba gets really hot like that too.
but, when it gets TOOOO hot, then shut it off, and let it cool for a while.
if this problem is really pestering you call Sony Customer Service, and maybe they could help you fix it.
