My website - January 7th 2009, 03:52 PM

Well, before I was hospitalized a spent over 6 months creating a website (with help of course). Now I have decided to 'update' or 'recreate' it.

Any ideas of what should go in there? I mean what would you like to see if it were you wanting to view a site?

A professional looking website without flash or java on the homepage at least. As for content I dunno really, I'm fine with just about anything.

Only one or two font faces. Normal ones, too, like Times or Verdana. Something extravegent is okay for, say, a header, but nothing else. And stay away from Papyrus and bold fonts, like Impact. Also pick a standard font size.

Calm colors. Orange, red and yellow aren't good choices. You'll notice a lot of websites are blue, but black, a calm green, brown, etc, all could work. Your website should have a color scheme, it should not be any form of rainbow.

Like Sonic said, no flash or java.

Organized content. Not too much content on the homepage. Your homepage should capture my attention and explain the purpose of the site, not BE the site.

A purpose. Unless it's a blog, it should be about something people want to hear about, not just randomness.

A white or otherwise neutral background color. Notice I said color, not wallpaper. Wallpapers are distracting and black backgrounds strike me as unprofessional.

I'll let you know if I think of anything else.

You could go find a template online, which is usually coordinated quite well with colors and such, and can be edited using Dreamweaver or the likes.

And as Lee and Jessie said, flash and java are no no's. Javascript, on the other hand, is ok, and quite useful. And yes, there's a difference

It depends what your site is generally going to be.

Nothing too complicated, colors that match and a pleasantly viewable page.

When you decide what it's going to be about, let us know to give you more ideas

Re: My website - January 7th 2009, 05:00 PM

well, its about me, its about mental health/suicide, it will have games, articles to read, funny articles, music, funny things to read, serious things to read, a blog, my writings.
& pictures, quizzes & loads more.

I have a front page & then you go into the site

I have 3 main frames, the navigatiuon, the main page & the blog. I have kept that all the same, but I am totally working on the structure of the menu & hoping to update almost all the content.

Im keeping the color scheme to black, blue & purple.

Thats it I guess.

Standards compliant is nice
No flash or java (except where necesary, i.e. for a game)
Good typography (clear, easy to read. Using Times New Roman, unless it specifically fits the site looks unprofessional)
Matching color scheme (no more than 3-4 colors plus black and white)
CSS based layout if possible
White space (refers to empty space on the page, not necessarily white. Don't fill every single inch of the page, give your content some breathing room)
Don't abuse photoshop brushes
Make sure navigation is clear, understandable and consistently placed on every page.

That's a quick list of some things to keep in mind. Sorry for all the design lingo, I am a part time web designer :P

Also, designerstalk.com is a really good resource. If you do post your site there, don't get discouraged when they rip every little detail about it apart for things that seem to be absolutely minor. They do that to pretty much every site posted there, so you're not being singled out, just how they are :P

Good luck with your site. I'll be happy to give you any advice or help you need if you get stuck, just shoot me a PM.
