how many years should you get out of a laptop? - April 2nd 2010, 02:42 PM

if it is new when you bought it.

Mine is 2 years old now and I think it won't last me even another year (hopefully until Christmas), but I would have hoped to get 4 out of it at least.

Re: how many years should you get out of a laptop? - April 2nd 2010, 03:05 PM

My laptop is three years old and I plan on having it for at least another three years. I have had no problems and I use it a lot, every day. I have a ton of stuff on here and I've been doing some cleaning up this morning.
Mine is a Toshiba.
I think that at least four.

Re: how many years should you get out of a laptop? - April 2nd 2010, 03:12 PM

My last laptop lasted 3 year and I never had any problems with it. It actually still works and my Mum and Dad share it now but it it very slow and the casing and one of the hinges is broken. It will probably last another 6 months with them using it. I didn't look after that laptop at all and I always let it overheat but I am being very careful with this new one. I am hoping for this new one to last me 4/5 year through Uni.

One of my friends has one that he has had for 6 years
It is not the newest obviously but he has updated it with all new software
It runs good, however he put a lot of money into updating it
I would say it depends on how you treat it though
Taking good care of your laptop will allow it to last longer

I do look after my laptop well so I don't see why it's not lasted longer.. I'll pay to get it serviced and see if it picks up..

How do you stop a laptop from overheating?

Re: how many years should you get out of a laptop? - April 2nd 2010, 04:20 PM

I've had my laptop for a year and 3/4 and it's already failing and breaking regularly. I take care of it but I guess Toshiba (or perhaps just Vista) are awful. I've never bought one of them before, but it's been a bad first experience.

As for how long should it last, I say it should last at least 4 years. I've just never had much luck with laptops.

I guess the easiest way to stop it overheating is to use it in such a way that all the vents on it are uncovered, like on a flat desk rather than on your bed or something where the duvet can block the holes. That's generally the reason mine has over-heated before.

To prevent my laptop from overheating, I use a cooling pad. It is just a fan that I put under the laptop. It plugs into a USB port. It also has USB ports on the side, mine comes with four. You can get them with eight, I think.

Mine is 4 years old now, and I intend to use it for at least another year or so. It still works fine.

To stop is overheating, you just need to make sure the air vents are not blocked really. If I'm using it in bed, I'll have it on a tray or hardback book, so it has a flat surface, and some space around the vents.

My macbook is only about 6 months old but i think i'll be upgrading before i actually need to, just because i get bored of laptops. But on the other hand i have an ergo which i've had for 3 years and it's still working fine. Although the only person who uses it is my mum and all she does is emails really.

My laptop is 2 years old and to be honest i'm already saving up for a desktop PC.
It's not so much that it isn't doing great, it could probably last another 5 years. But the technology coming out for the games I play will be getting enhanced, meaning better graphics. So I have to get a Desktop PC (so I can upgrade it later on) and play my games with pure quality

My laptops don't last much...not because they break down but they are usually involved in accidents my last one was hit but a basketball, but this one I actually want it to last atleast 4 years all though university.
About the heating try not using your laptop of your bed or legs try using it in a hard surface to prevent it from heating.

Depends on the quality of the components put in there and how it's manufactured, how good of a laptop it is and how new it is.
I'm guessing with laptops these days, like the good ones, they could last you at least 3-5 years, depending on how often you use it. I don't see laptops lasting you even 10 years though, as with a desktop it could last you that long if it's a good one.
My friend has had 3 top of the line laptops, already burnt out. She works on them all day though, they are specifically for work and mail and such and she's already burnt them all out. They get very hot, everything is so thin so everything's built together very closely, therefore there is no room to put a fan in there and everything gets so over-heated it eventually wears out. Now with a desktop, sure you can't take them everywhere with you and they're not as convenient, but at the same time they last much longer because they are big, so there is room for fans and everything stays cooler, therefore everything is sturdier and built together better because of more significant space for everything, so it lasts longer.

I use one of these.
http://www.sofiaandsam.com/laptop-desk.html

I love it, it raises the laptop to a better height to use so stops my neck hurting and because of the flat surface the fans don't get blocked of covered.
I used to just sit on my couch wrapped up in a blanket with my laptop on my knee. The blanket used to getting the the gaps where the fan was and block it up causing it to over heat.

For now this is a cheep fix and when it does get a bit old and slower I will get a USB cooling fan but for now I don't need one.
