Ubuntu.... - April 27th 2010, 02:20 AM

Does anyone on here use Ubuntu or any other Linux?

I <33 my Ubuntu 10.04 LTS RC. I've made it all awesome. And I LOVE what the devs have done with the Ambiance theme, though I don't much like all the PURPLE. I thought the 9.10 splash screen was superior, but I still love my Lucid.

Re: Ubuntu.... - April 27th 2010, 06:10 PM

I'm running openSUSE 11.2 (desktop here) on my laptop and LOVING it! I've got the 4 virtual desktops set up in a 2x2 grid, and I can switch between them just by moving the mouse to the side of the screen, so it like leaves one screen on the left and enters the next one the right. I can post screenshots if you want

And yes, I can do the rotating cube thing also...

What problems are you having cwkguy? I can help you if you need it. I'm kind of an Ubuntu geek.

Union of V: Sweet. I tried out openSUSE before, but I will always be an Ubuntu guy. Not to mention I buy all of my machines off craigslist for really cheap (nothing more than $150) and KDE just slows it down. I'm a power user who focuses more on productivity than pretty-ness. Though I'm loving 10.04 LTS. Attached is a picture of my desktop.

I just did a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) LTS and it is great! I got it customized the way I like, most of the software removed, and my own added. Does anyone else hate Open Office with as much passion as I do? I only ever used it for taking notes in class, and I find that tomboy works much better.

Re: Ubuntu.... - May 3rd 2010, 01:10 PM

OpenSUSE is actually designed to be a Gnome OS, just the majority of users pick KDE when installing it! But I agree, Ubuntu has Gnome down to a tee.

I've been using the OO word processor quite a lot, and while it's very usable and the typesetting makes a lot more sense than with Word, it's just doesn't feel as direct or something?

Probably my problems with Open Office is just I've gone through a semester of Microsoft Office 2007 training, have been Microsoft certified, and I never actually figured out how to do ANYTHING on Open Office. lol.

Re: Ubuntu.... - May 5th 2010, 01:33 PM

I was running Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala. I had to switch back to Windows (gack!) because of compatibility problems with some of my hardware, and because of 90% of my software wouldn't run in WINE. and Dual-Booting was just causing problems. if I get a second PC, though, I'd have just Ubuntu (or K) on this one, and Windows on a higher-end gaming platform.

I have the latest Ubuntu on our family desktop, absolutely love it. Very, very, very stable, very nice appearance and effects, OpenOffice works a charm, and it's very fast. VERY, fast.

I noticed some linux operating systems... the internet browser... or flash player, somehow crashes when ur playing media files online. Usually happens when you leave them standing for a few hours.

If you've got some spare time, read this:

But don't if you're easily triggered. If you're not easily triggered then go ahead.

That's flash. Flash sucks. It does. That's why everyone is moving to HTML5, so you needn't worry about Flash crashing your browser for long.

Re: Ubuntu.... - May 7th 2010, 08:08 PM

No, it's a Linux thing. If I understand correctly, Macromedia refused to support flash on Linux so the Linux hackers had to make their own version. It's not exactly stable sometimes...
