Favourite Computer Brand? - May 30th 2010, 07:41 PM

Actually this can be computer or laptop brands. =P

Personally, Compaqs and Acers seem to hate me -_-
I am such a Toshiba person!
Which is why im sooo excited to get my new Toshiba lap top! =D
We have a compaq and acer at my house right not, I hate them both and they hate me.
Always overheating, the cord that you plug in seems to get bent so you have to jiggle it for it to charge and they just...errr!!!

So how about everyone else?

I'll do whatever it takes to be the mistake you can't live without.

Ew, Acers ¬____¬ Worst thing I ever bought in my life. My ex had one too and it was a nightmare. My current HP laptop has so far been great

Edit: My Acer had a problem with the fan too :/

It really depends on useage. For normal business use, I'd recommend Lenovo, or Dell. I'd need to know more about your plans with it, in order to more correctly answer your question.

Re: Favourite Computer Brand? - June 2nd 2010, 02:58 PM

Sticking to major brands will most likely make you much happier. The major brands have better support and service, and the ability to do repairs/warranty work, where as a homebuilt, you lose out on the services.

Also laptops, although getting better, are significantly more difficult to build, but it's not impossible. I would not recommend building a laptop as a first computer.

The nice thing about Dells and Lenovo's, as well as some of the other brands, are recovery partitions. This simplifies OSRI's quite significantly, and reduces the need to have extra discs to keep track of. The downside to this, is if the HDD fails, you would then lose your OS, and the ability to install it, and you may not be shipped with reinstallation media. You could potentially have to purchase a new HDD, and a new license and install media for the O.S.

The bottom of the market is netbooks. They typically run from about $300 to about $450. Steer clear of netbooks. They are cheaper, yes, but do no have a lot of the features a larger laptop will have. They typically do not have any optical drives, so you would have to purchase a seperate USB CD/DVD/Blu-ray in order to install anything by way of optical media. They are very small, and very lightweight. You would also be getting a smaller screen, smaller keyboard, and smaller touch pad, if equipped with one at all. They typically are equipped with a trackpoint/trackstick/little red button which can take some getting used to, if you're not already familiar with them.

Most likely, you'll be happier with a middle-range laptop. These typically cost between $500 and $1,000. These are powerful machines, that are more adaptable to anything you are doing, such as gaming, homework, email, and such. This typically is the workhorse of most laptop users, and for general purposes, is best. You will usually have a optical media drive, a larger battery with higher mAh ratings, which means more time between chargings. These typically weigh anywhere between 3 pounds, and around 10 pounds, depending on the model. The lighter the laptop, typically the more expensive it is.

In the higher end laptops, you will find what is called a desktop replacement. These are typically very heavy laptops, weighing sometimes 15 pounds or more. They are more powerful, have a lot more features, and always come with optical media drives. They are more powerful machines, with much higher CPU speeds, as well as more RAM. They are typically more expensive, upwards of about $1,500 USD, most typically, and can go up to around $12,000, or even more.
