Problem with streaming videos :/ - June 23rd 2010, 07:06 PM

For some reason my laptop has started to hate streaming videos ____ If I'm on youtube for example trying to play a 3 minute video it takes forever for it to load fully. If I just watch it before it has loaded fully it stops, restarts, stops again constantly.

I don't know why :| It was never like this before. I've completely given up using things like iplayer as it takes so damn long.

Hm..thing is, my first thought is to check that someone in your house isn't using all of your bandwidth. Maybe someone's downloading something and hogging all the bandwidth?

If no-one is, then maybe it's just line congestion at your IP's side? I'm guessing it happened recently, so maybe give it till tomorrow, or even check again in a few hours, and maybe it would have fixed itself, since it definitely sounds like the symptoms of an inadequate, overcrowded internet connection.

Hope this helps

Aside from that. You haven't changed internet service providers or anything recently have you?

Also, if you have wireless activated and it's not properly secure, other people living nearby can steall your internet away. That's something worth looking into.

I'd try a full spy-ware and anti-virus scan too. Maybe try something like CCleaner.

Thanks everyone Today it hasn't been so bad to stream. Still not as quick as it used to be but it's fine. I'll do a virus check now How do I know if my internet is secure or not? (I do have wireless) We've had the same provider for about four years.

Well if you have Vista, you can use the little networking icon in the bottom right to see. The easiest way would just be to disconnect and then try to reconnect wirelessly. It'll give you a list of available networks and should say "Security enabled network" next to yours if it is.

If it isn't, there are various ways to secure it, depending on your router. You can have it so that only devices from a list of MAC addresses (which you provide) can access it or you can have a security key, which will be an alphanumerical list of characters.

If you need any help on the matter, give me a shout.
