weird screen color - July 18th 2010, 08:06 PM

okay, so I am not sure how to explain this.

When I move my laptop a certain way....or I tilt the screen, the color on my screen gets all messy and turns neon colors, like pink. I am not sure what is wrong with it. My mom told me, I may have to take it to the Geek Squad. I am freaking out that I may need a new laptop. Which, I can't afford.

Any opinions? Did it make sense, lol?

I may be wrong, however, I believe theres something inside of your computer that connects your screen to the hard drive thingy.. So take it to geek squad and they might just need to plug it in properly..

The hard drive thingy

My top guess would be a dodgy connection between the video card and the monitor. Can you try to connect it to an external monitor using external VGA (blue), DVI (white) and HDMI (neither)?

Can you possibly dumb down what you said?

Hey now, no one said I was smart! :P

Umm, he said.. plug in an external monitor, as in, another monitor, using cables.. I still say take it to Geek Squad :P I don't think the laptop that you have will let you plug one in.. As well. I could be wrong again xD

Re: weird screen color - July 18th 2010, 08:22 PM

Unrelated: It could be magnetic interference, does moving your laptop away from a source of magnetism (speakers, subwoofers and obviously magnets) work?

I'll have a go, my apologies if anything comes across as patronising.

There is a video card in your laptop (technically a GPU but that's irrelevant lol) that exports video signals. There is likely to be a small cable running from the card to your monitor wholly inside the laptop.

It is my guess that this cable is somehow twisted or a pin is loose which can cause discolouration.

A lot of modern laptops have another connection from the video card in the form of an external port which is used for hooking up an external monitor, depending on the age of your laptop it could be blue, white or even HDMI.

A diagnostic test would be to use this external output to connect to another monitor (or tv) using a cable and seeing the result.

EDIT - Pictures: For the sake of the size of this post I have put them in a spoiler tag

Spoiler:

Does this happen when you hold the lid/screen of the laptop? Because if so, it's normal - it's just the LCD reacting because you're applying pressure on it.

Hey, so I gave in and was annoyed with it. I took it to Geek Squad and they said it is the graphics card (?) and since I have a warranty on it for 3 years, I get it fixed for free. Thank you for all the help. I appreciate it.
