Ahhh LAPTOPS!!! - January 29th 2011, 10:44 PM

It keeps turning itself off (also happens to be when I am in the middle of typing a long response or downloading something or saving something) and I am pretty sure it is because it overheats, it was taken into the computer place before and had the fan fixed...but it keeps overheating again! Anyone know how I can reduce the heat or something just to make it stay on!!! I never put it on a chair or something, it always is on a hard surface, this helps but it doesn't quite fix it!

Can you tell me what type of laptop is this and how long ago you bought it? If it is overheating and failing in the course of normal usage sounds like either a design flaw or defect.

Are you comfortable with opening up your laptop and check its internal components? If you don't, I suggest you find a family member or friend who can, or just take it to a shop.

No offense, but when dealing with overheating problems, 85% of the times you have to open up your computer in order to fix it; the last thing we want to happen is for you to "deep fry" your computer's chips with statics because you didn't grounded yourself before touching them. Again, no offense, I don't mean to say that you cannot do it or anything, but, you know, it's better to have some experience before you try.

Anyhow, normally, I would suggest
  • check the temperature (and if you would, please post it here, just the temperature of the chipset and CPU are usually good enough),
  • clean up the heatsink (while at that, clean up everything inside, too; computers need to be keep clean outside and inside),
  • check if your heatsink compound is old and dry, and
  • check for loose component

For you, however, I suggest:
  • let your tech savvy family member or friend does it for you,
  • take it to a computer shop, or
  • buy a laptop cooler (laptop cooling pad, whichever you want to call it)

A few people might say that laptop coolers don't help reduce heat; well, certainly those people have never used one. Laptop coolers does work. They are capable of reducing around 10 -15 degree Celcius (50 to 60 degree Fahrenheit). And that helps! 85 degree Celsius is certainly better than 100 degree Celsius. 85 degree Celsius is still pretty hot, but even just reducing from 100 to 90 degree Celsius might prevent an overheating (of course, it's different depending on what you have, but because I have no idea what you have [you never told us], I just throwing out examples here).

Alternatively, why don't you just take this oppotunity and nag your parents for a new laptop? Ask them for a laptop plus a cooling pad! Even if your new laptop isn't overheating, having a cooling pad does improve the longevity of your laptop.

its overheating

older lappies generate more heat.

New pcs are cheap. the avg cost for a new system is about 700 dollars or less.

My old laptop was exactly the same, luckily my current one hasn't overheated once.

You could always buy a cooling pad? go to your local computer store, tell them whatlaptop you have and ask for one

If it is overheating, maybe look into getting a new laptop or get a cooling pad.

Otherwise, look into other things that it could be. Is it plugged in? Is there some odd setting that turns your computer off after a set amount of time?
