How to make a photo look like a drawing?

For those who are inevitably thinking how stupid I am for not being able to do this, since it's the easiest thing in the world to slap a sketch filter on a photo, I know about all that but what I'd really like to be able to do is make a photograph look as if it was actually hand-drawn. Ideally somehow be able to pick out only main lines so that it would look like an actual sketch rather than what every tutorial I've found so far has done, which is to just to make the photo black, white and grey with a slight sketchy effect really.
Failing that, anybody feel like drawing some people?
(This is for my band; I think it'd be kind of cool to have a picture up that's just drawings of each of our faces - which is why just the Photoshop sketch effects etc. won't really do.)
