Updating ubuntu. - July 17th 2011, 12:01 PM

Each time I try to update my OS I get this...for every file it's updating.

'W: Failed to fetch http://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/de...74359_i386.deb
Could not connect to 172.28.136.6:8080 (172.28.136.6). - connect (110: Connection timed out)'

How do I fix it? I've tried wirelessly and with a DSL cable, so I doubt it's a problem with my connection.

Are you sure that you are updating your OS?

Judging from the address and the name of the file, it looks like you're trying to download Google Chrome version 9 package, not your OS.

-----------------------------------

Note: I'm assuming that you're running the latest version of Ubuntu. As of the moment I'm typing this post, the latest version is 11.04. Why? Well, because you never tell us what you have.

If you wish to install Google Chrome on Ubuntu (the current stable version of Chrome as of the moment I'm typing this post is 12), try this:
1. Download the package from this page. Since you're using Ubuntu, make sure to choose the .deb one. And if in doubt, go with the 32-bit version.

2. Then right-click on the downloaded package and choose Open with Ubuntu Software Center.

3. In the Software Center, click Install. Wait for a few minutes and you're done.

To install from the terminal, the command line should be something like this:
Code:
sudo dpkg -i google-chrome-stable_current_i386.deb

If you already have Chrome and are looking to update it, then in the Software Center, you should see an Upgrade option rather than the Install option.

You can also update Chrome from the Update Manager. Running the Update Manager should automatically update everything you need in your Ubuntu. In Ubuntu 11.04, you can find the Update Manger in Control Center.

------------------------------

If you're having some problems with the Synaptic Package Manager, then try changing the server. I have mine set to Servers for United States because, of course, I'm living in the USA. I don't know where you live, but you can try switch to the Main Server instead.

In Synaptic Package Manager, you can find the option to switch servers in Settings ---> Repositories. Note: You'll need to reload it and see if it works.

Note: You might need to update the Synaptic Package Manager itself. You can do this via the Update Manager. Just push Check and update everything it finds. In Ubuntu 11.04, you can find the Update Manager in Control Center.

No, that's not what I'm asking.I'm already onto the upload manager. The problem is actually downloading anything. Everything fails.
But yes, I'll try switching servers.

Edit: Switching servers hasn't worked.

That doesn't make sense.

That single error should only happen because you're trying to update or upgrade your Google Chrome to Google Chrome 9 but the location it trying to reach doesn't respond. If you're trying to update multiple stuffs from the Update Manager, there should be a bunch of error messages similar to that but slightly different, not just one.

Are you sure that's the only error it provides when you try to update? If you're trying to update a bunch of stuffs, there should be a bunch more errors similar to that popping up.

------------------------

Anyhow, could you please post or attach the sources.list so we may take a look at it? It's in /etc/apt/sources.list. Use this command to open it in your text editor:
Code:
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
That sources.list should be able to tell us a lot, including your Ubuntu version. Let's see if it is configured correctly.

-----------------------

By the way, what server did you changed to? And are you behind a proxy?

Note: You can access Software Sources to change the server from your Update Manager, too: Just click on Settings and choose Ubuntu Software
