I want some games my laptop can run... - August 5th 2011, 02:40 AM

Okay so my laptop isn't the best but I want to play some games on it to stop me being bored all the time.

These are the specs :

Windows 7
3 GB DDR2
320GB hard drive
Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 – based on PCI Express technology
Intel® Pentium® processor T4200
(2.0 GHz, 1MB L2 Cache, FSB 800 MHz)

I'm not sure what other specs you might need so ask me if I've forgotten to include something.

I've been playing LOTR online lately and I like games like that but I'd prefer some that are offline so I can play even without an internet connection.
Other games I like are Pokemon, Angry Birds, Simulators like Theme Park World, Spyro, Black and White and Mario Kart.

So anyone got any suggestions?

As a gamer...your specs don't seem to be the best for the games I would suggest. You can always try and see!

Go make an account with Steam. They have many games and some area really good--but you have to pay for most. They've come out with Team Fortress 2 (which I absolutely love) for free now and there is an offline mode.

League of Legends is a free to play game as well.

Go to Kongregate.com for free online games-these are mainly flash games.

I do have a Steam account and I do look for games on there sometimes but all the ones I end up liking are either too expensive or don't work on my laptop

I do play online games on Kongregate too but when I don't have an internet connection I'm out of options.

My laptop is similar specs to yours and can run TF2 if nothing else is running.
It can also run Portal but not Portal 2 (which makes me sad).
On Steam it tells you the specs needed so you can check before buying and there are free trails on some games.

It also has a bit of a fit if I try to play any games like The Sims, Theme Park Inc or Theme Hospital. Sometimes it works, sometimes not.

With shit specs like that you are not going to be able to run any modern games, At least not with some decent video settings.

Agreed with a lot of the above...and well yeah. In order to run games smoothly, you'd need more RAM (the recommend minimum is 4 GB RAM)

YES TO MINECRAFT *drool* although you might have issues playing offline--my boyfriend's laptop doesn't let him play Minecraft well for some reason, too choppy

TF2 so amazing...but yeah laptop specs are a must because of the graphics and all
Same with Portal and Portal 2

Peggle!!! DO IT. That and Audiosurf is so much fun, both can be offline games bought off of Steam

I was going to suggest The Humble Indie Bundle too.
You can also check out Terraria, Its described as a 2D side-scroller/rpg clone of minecraft.
Also Spelunky sounds like a good game.

I would suggest Minecraft, too. You can set the settings and generally if you down the distance, and the other video settings it runs on almost any computer!

You might try American McGee's Alice in Wonderland. Though I think they upped the price since the 2nd one came out.

diablo 1 & 2
half life 2 (might be able to do 1 too)
Cake Mania
Diner Dash etc

Basically if you look at games before 2007, a good portion will have low specs.

Hope you find some good games!

So you have gray hair and you're only 26

that's just another reason I love you...

Spyro is such a classic, can still remember the days of playing it with my brother back in the day on Playstation 1.

The Roller Coaster Tycoon series is pretty epic, fun and addicting. Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 will be best for you, and I find it to be the best of the 3. ^_^

You can always play Facebook or Google+ Games. I have to say, Google+'s games are great. It has Bejewled, Angry Birds, a bunch of puzzle games, some strategy ones and one by Zynga, so the future with Farmville looks hopeful!

Sims 2 Double Deluxe. Or The Sims 3, although I'm not quite sure yet how good it is compared to the second one as I just started playing.
If you can...if you're a crazed Star Wars nerd like myself, try buying The Phantom Menace. It's smooth and not too big, and it's fun to play on the computer. I got a huge chip in my CD so I miss that game

Try this site if you have certain games in mind. Just type in the name of a game and it'll come up with how well you can run it (if at all).

Also, try http://gog.com/ - they sell really cheap, classic, incredible games. Like Fallout 1 or 2, Duke Nukem 3D etc. and they'll all run on even the underpowered modern laptops! Plus you can download them over and over, burn them to discs, get tonnes of extras like manuals, soundtracks, posters etc.!

I have been on this but it just tells me my laptop can't run anything Like it told me LOTR online wouldn't run but it does so I'm not so sure I can fully rely on it

I'll check out some of the other games you guys suggested, except Sims, I'm not a fan of that

It probably says you can't run anything because there is no guarantee that a laptop graphics chipset will be able to run it. On boxes for games it usually says something like: "May not work with laptop chipsets". Also, your graphics chip has a fairly old-ish version of OpenGL (it's version 1.5 and we are currently on release 4.1!) so that could be another reason. However it does have DirectX 9 which is pretty good.
When these websites say you need "this graphics card or better", it's a generalisation. It's really to do with what's actually on the graphics card.

A good fun game would be World Of Goo (sorry can't link cos not enough posts, google for "2DBoy"). It's a puzzle game but it's really good fun to play, it's cheap and you can download it off the internet and play it offline. Runs on pretty much anything and you can download a demo to make sure!

Eh, unless you get a gaming laptop, with a dedicated card, or a desktop replacement laptop with a dedicated video card, you're not likely to be able to run much.

You also can't really add a graphics card to a laptop anyways, you really have to order one with it in the first place. As for what you can run, the CYRI utility is a great start.

Re: I want some games my laptop can run... - August 20th 2011, 11:16 PM

Ok I have seen so many people saying so many different things.

Your processor:
correct me if I'm wrong but it looks like its a dual core. This should be fine for 2D games and less intensive 3D games such as portal 1. Unfortunately, it has a fairly low-ish clock speed, but it isn't terrible. However, depending on how the processor is fitted to the motherboard (many intel ones these days are soldered) it can be extremely difficult if not impossible to upgrade the processor without a new PC.

Your RAM:
3Gb is PLENTY. More intensive modern games require 2Gb as a minimum, so for your gaming you should be fine. Also, RAM is easy to upgrade (depending on the laptop) and relatively cheap too. There are more important things to spend money on. Remember that 4Gb (of which 3.2Gb is actually used) is the LIMIT of RAM you can have unless you have a 64-bit processor/OS. Also check that the rest of your components can take it if you plan to add a LOT of RAM.

Hard-drive:
Looks like you have a pretty large hard drive. Provided you don't fill it with too many games/videos/photos/songs/programs it should be fine. External hard drive prices are extremely low and falling all the time.

Graphics card:
This is where the problem lies. You have integrated graphics which are often not supported and are not gauranteed to run many games. The bad news is, graphics cards are very difficult to put in and it is not possible on most laptops. If you get a new laptop, then get one with ATI mobility radeon graphics. These are much better but do some research on the internet first! Make sure the card can run games before you buy, to save wasting a lot of money.

I don't claim to be a complete genius, this is just what I know. I am currently looking at a graphics card/power supply upgrade for a desktop so I can run a certain wargame that's coming out in autumn (don't worry I'm not a call of duty freak :P). And yes, I'm 'probably' classed as a nerd PM if you want any more help

~Sheppy96

PS. If you win the lottery, buy an Alienware laptop :P
