Wrong Gender Online? XD - August 15th 2011, 05:31 AM

Back in the day, when my username was "Silver" (or some variation of it) on other websites, people ALWAYS mistook me for a boy. When I asked fellow members why that was the case, they said that 1) "Silver" is a masculine username, and 2) the no-nonsense way I respond to threads is unlike the way most female members respond (keep in mind this was on other websites, not TeenHelp).

So now I'm curious... how many of you have been labeled with the wrong gender on other websites? Does it annoy you? What did you do that gave other members the wrong impression?

Re: Wrong Gender Online? XD - August 15th 2011, 05:40 AM

I have been referred to as a girl before on another forum, though pretty much everyone knows I'm a boy. It wasn't annoying, I actually found it to be a bit funny. My username, which I will not say, is what put that person under the impression. I don't believe that my posting habits or style could have given a different impression, though I do use a lot of emoticons (not that it is a characteristic of a girl or bad).

I don't really use other forums so much now so I can't say I've been labelled a guy there. But on here, when my username was still "Natsumi" I went into chat and someone thought I was a guy. People were calling me Nat (they thought it was short for Nathan) and my name was Japanese for "Summer Beauty" which is obviously so masculine.
I've never had a huge issue with it since then though, everyone knows I'm a girl.

People use to think I was a guy back when I had Gundam101 as a username. (on a different site) My friend gave me this nickname, so I got annoyed and just made a new account xD

When I was Boo Ghost I think people called me a dude a couple of times. My usernames have had my name in a couple of times and I've never heard of a guy being called Cara so it's a hard mistake to make there

Okay, I'm going to hold my hands up and admit I can remember mistaking you for a guy once Robin

Only once though .. like when I first joined

I've never been mistaken for a boy. Which is probably down to having 'RainbowSkies' as my last username

Hahaha! I can see that. "PSY" and "Robin" are ambiguous, and if you were in the chat room, you wouldn't have been able to see my gender.

People in the chat room used to think I was a guy.
Maybe my username sounds like a guy but they were all surprised to find out I was a girl.

I think I was mistaken for a guy a few times when my username used to be crysdamodegus2 on various sites. (Yeah, I know, what a mouthful, huh? But I was 11, guys! ) Since then, I haven't been mistaken. But I was never annoyed by it when I was younger, and I don't think I would be now. I'd just politely correct the person.

Plus, I've made my mistakes as well. I tend to assume everyone online is a girl unless stated otherwise. Don't ask me why!

On another site, I'm so confused about the gender of some users...One was "nic" but I thought they were a guy for the longest time until I was told that nic is short for nicole. In chat ONCE someone thought I was a dude...and I have no idea why.

I've been mistaken as a guy several times on here haha
Even though I have "Female" as my gender.

On another site people thought I was a boy for almost a year...and I had girls crushing on me who were straight. I finally told them

that's just another reason I love you...

As far as I know, people have known I'm a girl. However, it's not like it would bother me if it did happen. People make mistakes.

People on another website thought I was a lad. Because my name is a unisex name and I have a big obsession over football and rugby. People used to, and sometimes still do mistake a letter in my name for an 'e' instead of it's actual letter. It gets annoying at times.

I totally thought you were a guy a while back! Partly because your picture is of a man and partly because where I live Robin is how guys tend to spell it and Robyn is the girls spelling.. Oops I haven't ever been mistaken for a guy on here though because my names are always feminine and I always have my name "Jen" written under so there's no mistaking me

I've been mistaken for female a number of times online. I cannot see why though. I do not feel I act in a femine demeanor.

I have also been mistaken for being much older than I am.

Nope, my first name is on most of the sites I visit frequently and quite frankly I've never hear of a male who's birth name was Amanda.
And plus, Sprinklez and Sing.Bake.Repeat. are pretty girly user names so I don't think anyone has thought I was a boy on here.

Tara, I remember the early days when you had your username as spiderman(girl) just to ensure people didn't get confused.

I don't think I've ever been mistaken for a male, probably because I use emoticons quite a lot (I've noticed that girls seem to use '' more than boys) and have flowers as my avatar.

I think that sometimes if a girl is very straight-talking and doesn't say things like "Aww hun", it is assumed that they are male.

Yeah, in this online game. Apparently I was being 'too' nice if that's even possible, and someone mistook me for a girl seeing as the female gamers are the really nice/not-so-serious people on games Oo.

Re: Wrong Gender Online? XD - August 31st 2011, 01:04 AM

50/50 really with me. Depends what people have seen of me. If they see me in a debate, instantly they know I'm a guy. If it's elsewhere in a casual section, they most likely think I'm a girl.

I thought about you for the rest of the day.
Catching my head turning to find you again.
I hated myself for it.
