Computer freezes when charger is unplugged. - August 25th 2011, 01:03 AM

I've had this problem for awhile now, both on kubuntu and ubuntu. At first I thought it was something wrong with the OS, but since it happens on both I guess I can rule that out.

When I unplug, or plug in, my laptop charger, the computer freezes. The mouse won't move, so I have to shut the computer off with the power button, and then turn it back on. It basically means I have to keep my computer charging at all times, which can get annoying.

Does anyone know what could be causing this and what I can do to fix it?

Edit: try this first. Found on a toshiba internet forum "

"Most of the laptops face the problem with the residual charge storage. Residual charge gets stored near the RAM chips. If the voltage of residual charge reaches threshold then the system will not be able to access the RAM chips. If the system is not able to access the RAM chips then the system will not be able to boot. To bring the laptop back to working state, you will have to discharge the residual charge stored. To clear the residual charge, shut down the laptop and disconnect the AC adapter. Remove the battery and press and hold the power button for about 30 seconds. Release the button and replace the battery. See if the problem persists."

You could try cleaning the registry and a corrupt registry can cause freezes at odd times (for example when my registry went bust about a year back I couldn't play games. Everything else worked fine, but games made it freeze). Make sure you back it up first though.

It could also be an issue with the power supply (all the actual wires and electrical powery bits inside), though it sounds unlikely as it is just when you unlpug it.

PM if you need any help
