My ipod won't turn on :'( - October 24th 2011, 06:43 AM

It's a nearly-four-years-old nano, but it was working yesterday afternoon, although I couldn't turn it off shuffle.. and then when I tried to turn it on again later it just wouldn't happen. The battery is fully charged, I know that for a fact. I plugged it into my laptop and nothing happened, although the computer made the little 'connected' noise, itunes didn't come up, and the screen is still black. I've tried resetting but nothing happened.

Please please help.

Itunes eventually mentioned to me that it had detected an ipod which might be corrupt and could need restoring, or might just need to be disconnected and reconnected. So I disconnected and reconnected but nothing will happen again. :/

Happened to me last week with my nano ... lie it on a flat surface, not plugged into anything ... hold the menu (top) and middle button for about 10 seconds. A little apple should come up. That restores the ipod, should work from then on. Mine does it every now and then and this always seems to work

To restore the ipod you need to plug it into a laptop on the connector lead and click the 'restore' button on Itunes. You might want to do a virus scan of your laptop as I've been told by someone in my town that if your laptop has a virus it can get onto the ipod when you plug it into your laptop and stop your ipod from working. (not that I'm sure how much truth there is in that but its worth a shot as I got told it by some random pc guy in some run down pc shop ) . Other than that try resetting it hold down the middle button and menu button for a few seconds and the apple logo should come up and then it will reset its self, if none of those work maybe take it to a shop and get it checked out..

Itunes does not always load for me at first and tells me I need to unplug mine and re-plug it in sometimes with me it is a simple of case of I have simply plugged it into a different USB than the one I usually use therefore it means Itunes does not load and if it does it tells the ipod is unrecognisable. So try plugging it into a different USB port as-well. Check the lead your using to connect your ipod to your laptop with, the lead may have a loose connection in it somewhere as-well, if that's the case you can buy a new lead easily from most electrical shops.

Definitely try the suggestions mentioned above. But if your ipod never turns on (like even when its plugged in), it may be totally dead. My old ipod shut off once & never turned back on so I got a refund.

Sorry not to be rude guys, but obviously I've tried resetting (holding down the menu&centre buttons) several times!! The screen is completely black, it won't turn on at all, even when I plug it in. I tried to restore it on itunes (which deletes all your music) but it says there was an error restoring it or something...

How did you get a refund?? Mine is nearly four years old so I don't think it's still under warranty or anything. :/

Thanks for the replies.x

It might simply be the battery which you can get replaced but it will cost . Maybe take it to a shop and get someone to have a look at it ?

Try leaving it plugged in to your computer for an extended amount of time. Once the computer recognizes it, definitely try to restore it again. Try restoring a few more times.
If you keep getting errors while restoring, it sounds like it is an issue with the iPod, not the battery. Also, since you had issues turning shuffle off, this shows it probably is the iPod.

Your iPod is 4 years old...my best guess is the battery MAY be low, but since you had issues with the shuffle, connecting to your computer/the computer recognizing it, and restoring it, that it is the something with the iPod.

If you cannot restore it, take it in to the Apple store/genius bar. You can ask if they could figure out what is wrong with it.
You can "recycle" your iPod-you can turn in your iPod and get a discount on your next iPod.

I really doubt they'd give you a refund for your iPod, especially if it is 4 years old and having issues. They would give you a refund or replace if it was under warranty.

Yeah, it's probably too late. Mine was still within a year of the buying it. Sorry about that!

Just thought I would add that my ipod is a few years old & my computer doesn't always read it at first. So I plug it in, leave it plugged in while I shut it all the way down, & let it reload. Most of the time, the computer will read it then.
