a good netbook -
December 16th 2011, 02:57 AM
So I know they are bad netbooks and I know that sometimes people only buy them because they are 'cute' and small, but for the past years I buy big lap tops that hurt my back when I haul them off to class and the charger burns out a lot for me, and they are cheaper than laptops. So what do you recommend? I was looking at Asus (totally not because it comes in pink), I heard Dell sucks, toshiba sucks, and no mac apple suggestions please!

I am still largely a Mac user for the time being, but I wouldn't suggest a Mac because even their model that most closely fits a "netbook" (the MacBook Air) could be easily considered a rip off in the netbook category.
I use an Asus EEE PC 1005HA netbook, which comes in black and white with pretty minimal specifications. For taking notes and doing email and whatnot, it'll do just fine. But it doesn't have the specs that I would recommend for gaming or complex video editing, say. I've heard very good reviews of Dell netbooks, but their netbook line was recently discontinued. You may be able to find them on eBay or Amazon still, though. Netbooks range from $200-$500, give or take, and are not bad for the price and the specs that they have. They CERTAINLY have more functionality and storage space than any tablet could really hope for, with the exception of the Dell Inspiron Duo, which is a tablet that ships with a 120 GB hard drive. Asus service was anything but satisfactory--their technical support line is staffed by people who don't know what they are doing. But if you don't anticipate needing help, or if you are willing to buy a 3rd-party warranty (such as those from SquareTrade), that shouldn't be a huge problem. Chris (formerly Jazz Guy)

I can't really afford a mac no matter how much I wish and I just can't imagine spending all that for a computer with a piece of fruit on it. I really should have listed this, but I usually use this for school work mostly being writing papers, online research/online surfing for leisure, video watching online, and note taking in class.

Well yeah, the MacBook Air is more than 3 times the cost of my netbook, and has about less than one sixth the storage space. Granted, it has the new type of storage that costs more, and some of the other other specs are probably a bit better, but that is just a rip off. Plain and simple.
So a $300 low-end netbook would probably suit your needs just fine. Chris (formerly Jazz Guy)

No my back has been damaged before that so i need to keep my load light and I usually carry a notebook with me along with books the first day just in case I need them. Thanks for the deals though!

In terms of the MacBook Air - this is not classified as a netbook, it is a notebook. Yes there are pros and cons...everyone has their views.
Anyways, getting to the question. I actually tested out a lot of netbooks to be widely distributed at my high school and I have some important advice for you: 1. Look and try each model you look at - most netbooks have different keyboard layouts. I found it extremely frustrating when an important key that I use often was tiny and placed in a completely different place. ALSO, make sure that you can actually type and use the model! I found some netbooks easier to type on, some the trackpad sucked, some were just disappointing...etc. Always make sure that you can actually use it. 2. What do you want - look at what tech specifications you are looking for and compare to what is available. 3. Always take a look at well known suppliers. Try looking here at NewEgg, they are really good: http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCateg...&name=Netbooks Take a look at ASUS and Samsung, they were rated pretty high for netbooks...but also use what you like. Leave the past behind, just walk away When it's over, and the heart break And the cracks begin to show *~*~This little girl was alone in the world~*~* Hold Onto Hope |

I got a netbook a few months ago because my old laptop was huge and the battery lasted about 20 minutes on it's own. I don't understand why people say netbooks are so bad since I love mine and it does everything I need it to.
I have a Compaq which cost £199.99 and it's well worth the debt I'll be paying back to my parents for the next year and a half.

If you are a basic computer user where you only need it to type documents, email, browse the web, and simple tasks, then a netbook will most definitely be a great solution. Some people need a bigger screen than what a netbook has to offer (like to me those screens are tiny). The fact that they are ultra portable/light is another great reason why a basic user would buy a netbook in comparison to a laptop. Netbooks are a great travel/secondary computer solution. On the other hand, people that use their computers for gaming, programming, and even art (etc) tend to stay away from netbooks. I'm a programer and screen space is essential for multitasking. Netbooks aren't powerhouses, so someone who really uses their computer to its capability will also avoid netbooks as a main computer.
