Get the old profile back! - January 13th 2012, 06:59 PM

Hey guys. Ever hated switching to Timeline and want the old Facebook profile back? I have, and I figured out a way to make it work! Just follow these instructions. Hope this is helpful for some.

What he did on that article is changing the User-Agent string of the web browser. The User-Agent string tells the servers (Facebook servers, in this case) what web browser you are using.

-–user-agent=”Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 6.0)” makes the servers recognize your web browser as Internet Explorer 7 (IE7). Apparently Facebook's Timeline doesn't support IE7 and older; thus, it reverts back to the old profile layout.

Side notes:

MSIE 9.0 = Internet Explorer 9
MSIE 8.0 = Internet Explorer 8
MSIE 7.0 = Internet Explorer 7

Windows NT 6.1 = Windows 7
Windows NT 6.0 = Windows Vista
Windows NT 5.1 = Windows XP

The Bad:

As said above, that User-Agent string makes the servers believe that you're using IE7, regardless of what browser you're using. With the popularity of CSS3 and HTML5 rising, plus more and more websites are abandoning support for IE7 and IE6, doing this would make the servers think that you're still using the ancient IE7. You won't be able to enjoy new features of other sites either.

Again, many sites are abandoning supports for IE7 and IE6. If you continue to apply that IE7 User-Agent string to your web browser, then not just Facebook Timeline, you can also expect other new features of other sites that you visit often (such as YouTube, Wordpress, etc.) to not show up or not working properly at all!

I would not recommend doing this permanently.

===============================

Also, this is the User Agent for Internet Explorer 2 (IE2), if anyone wants to try a fun experiment with the web (also to prove my point):

--user-agent="Mozilla/1.22 (compatible; MSIE 2.0; Windows 3.1)"

Put that User-Agent string into your browser (you can follow the tutorial on the article that the OP linked to, just replace their User-Agent string with mine) and try posting on TeenHelp (in Advanced View) or search something on Google. (Note: Don't forget to clear your cache first.) See what I mean? That's the kind of trouble you might run into in the future if you keep using the User-Agent for IE7.
