I need to know!!

Thanks

So maybe I'm out of touch with something or maybe I'm stupid, but honest question: Why would a .me domain extension upset anyone? I really don't see any reason for it.

Could you please explain a little more? Thanks a lot!

Hi Rod

I hope you're OK.

People are creatures of habit. And that's true even when it comes to the world of . somethings. I just wanted to know if .me would throw people off. Or more importantly - whether or not they would remember it. Most people assume that a website ends in .com.

I plan on using .me in the very near future!!

Thanks,
GBH - Craig

I regularly come into contact with .com, .co.uk and .ac.uk so not really, I don't mind how any domain ends as long as the site is safe.

I think a .me would actually be more interesting, it would change things up a little bit, but at the same time by short and simple.

Hmm . . . interesting. Thanks! I never thought of it that way. I thought domain extensions are common enough that most people wouldn't have problems.

I still don't think that it would be a problem because we have very big sites that don't use popular domain extension. Last.fm is a huge music site; another one is formspring.me (used to be popular a few years ago, but then it lost to Tumblr).

========================================

Craig, is there anything stopping you from having two domain extensions? Using multiple domain names is a common practice nowadays; so if cost is not a problem, then there shouldn't be any other problem at all.

For examples:
You can let CanadaCraig.com be your main domain name,
then set 301 redirection (permanent redirection) for your CanadaCraig.me.

Or you can also let CanadaCraig.me be your main,
then set 301 redirection to your CanadaCraig.com to CanadaCraig.me.

I like Rod's idea the best. I think a .me domain name is really cool, memorable, and unique. But the problem is that most people are really used to .com (at least here anyway.) so I think a lot of people would accidentally type CanadaCraig.com on accident and find a blank page.

Solution: Spend the extra $5 a month and have both

Take me seriously.
I dare you.

No it wouldn't. It would make the website stand out. There aren't that many websites with .me domains.

Knowledge is half the battle.

$5 a month? No, typical domain names are not that expensive, unless you're buying the high-demand ones or buying from re-sellers--or both.
Here are some examples of the high-demand ones: the domain name sex.com was sold for about $12 million to $14 million USD (I can't remember exactly which, but either way, sex really sells, no? ); insure.com was sold for $16 million USD. Many domain names with .xxx extension has been sold for about $5000 USD a piece. Should I list more?

That aside, moving on:
A typical domain name with .com extension costs about $10 to $11 USD per year.
A typical domain name with .me extension costs about $9 to $10 USD per year.

WhoisGuard costs about $3 USD per year for each domain.

That's less than $30 USD per year for two domain names with .com and .me extensions, complete with WhoisGuard.

But wait, usually registrars reduce prices if you buy in bulk or stay with them for a few years. So it's actually possible to have both said domain names with WhoisGuard for less than $25 USD per year. That's much cheaper than $5 USD per month ($60 USD per year).

At first, I was thinking .Mac and MobileMe for some reason. That's my Apple-saturated self for you.

I agree that a .me domain would be unique, and the extension of your website shouldn't upset anyone. Anyone who is so picky that they refuse to use a site with an unusual domain extension is just plain ridiculous. As someone mentioned, though, it's incredibly easy to just have the .com domain as well, and place a simple redirect that takes you to the .me site (OR just mirror the site across both domains).

As long as I'm told that it's .me, I don't mind, just need to have notice.

Nah, it wouldn't bother me as long as I knew it was .me so I wouldn't wonder why the site wasn't working when entering .com accidentally over and over again.

Well not personally upset me, no.

But seeing the like (e.g www.canadacraig.me) may lead me to assume the site is spam/undafe/virus etc. Just because i'm not familiar with it

It wouldn't bother me but I think I'd forget it and probably use .com or something like that because .me isn't a well known domain.

Who cares if it's a well known domain though? If he says to people "my website is at canadacraig.me" I don't see why there would be an issue...

He'd have to keep emphasizing that its .me and not .com. But it is an awesome idea!!!
