Do I need these? - March 26th 2012, 07:49 PM

I'm cleaning up my computer a bit and I have this files/folders, I've had them for a while because I didn't know what they were so I didn't bother to delete them so I'm coming to you, smart people of TH to ask, do I need them or not? As I said, I don't know what they are, were they came from, what they're related to etc. but they're all in my downloads folder so I feel they're related to things I downloaded, obviously.

For future references, Google and Notepad (or any alternatives like Bing and Notepad++) are your friends. Alternatively, you can also extract the installer (then delete the folders that starts with $Name) to see what's inside.

=========================

Anyhow, here we go:

First column:

The folders Adobe CS4 and MS Office 2007 (E) are self-explanatory, right?

7z465-x64 should be deleted immediately. It's a 7-zip installer for 64-bit Windows OS. However, the current version (as of March 26, 2012) is 9.20; the one you have is version 4.65. You should download the latest version from the official website (it's free).

Cinergy_T_USB_XS_Drv_Setup_* can be deleted. It's drivers installer for your Cinergy T USB XS product. You cut the name off so I don't know what version you have, but you can download the latest version from the official website.

Configuration of what? I have no idea. Could you please right-click on it ---> Open With... ---> Notepad. Then copy-and-paste its content either here or to a private message to me (assuming that there's no sensitive info in there)?

iTunesMobileDevice.dll can be deleted. It's part of Apple's mobile device support and have no reason to be in your download folder. I assume that you downloaded it to replace the original one to fix whatever error you had.

QTML.dll can be deleted. It's part of Apple's Quick Time and once again, I have no idea why you would have in your download folder. The only explanation is that you downloaded it to replace the original one to fix whatever you had.

StaticaEN can be deleted. It's a Rainmeter skin, used to customize your desktop.

wrar380 should be deleted immediately. It's the installer for WinRAR, but yours is outdated. Honest question: Why do you have WinRAR when you already have 7-zip or why do you have 7-zip when you already have WinRAR? You supposedly to only use ONE of the two, either 7-Zip or WinRAR. You shouldn't have both.

-----------------------

Second column:

Gdi++ should be deleted immediately. It's a small PC application meant to mimic OS X's fonts rendering. However, its development has been suspended and no longer supported; in other words, it's a dead project. Gdipp is the new successor of this, but even gdipp project is dying, too.

Silent night is probably something that only you know because you're the only one who can check what's inside of it. What's the folder's contents anyway? Screenshots, maybe?

ADBEPHSPCS4_LS1 should be deleted immediately. It's part of Adobe's self-extractor and installer; you probably downloaded a trial version of Adobe CS4 before so that's why it's there. You can always download the installers from Adobe's official website.

Component.Krypton.*.dll can be deleted. Why do you have it there in the first place is beyond me. Are you a programmer? But then if you're a programmer, you wouldn't asking these questions here. Could you please tell me why on earth did you download it in the first place?

DDS_Utilities_* can be deleted. Once again this begs the question: Why did you downloaded it in the first place? I'm really curious, . If you need it again, you can download it from the official website.

LC162b should be deleted immediately. It displays a Longhorn-style system tray clock; so unless you're on Windows 2000 or Windows XP, you have no need for it. Besides, it's a dead project that hasn't been updated since 2004. We're living in 2012; time to move on, people.

I'm getting lazy so I just going to move quickly through the last three : Resource.cfg is something I don't know, though it looks like a sim3-modding file that I see here; could you right-click on it ---> choose Open With... ---> Notepad ---> then either post the content here or PM it to me? stations.layers is another one that I don't know, but if you want, you can send it to me via email and I'll take a look to see what it belongs to. Zibri.dat should be deleted immediately; it's a dead project and more well-developed alternatives are available.

Thank you very much, my downloads folder is now looking a lot better than it was before. I have absolutely no idea why I have most of it haha, especially as to why I had 7 zip and win rar, that is a bit weird but at least it's sorted now. I'll pm you the details of the ones you asked. Once again, thanks for the help
